A few newbie questions about my new FD...

I just collected my FD on Wednesday, and got it back home (600-odd miles) in one piece. So, I have a few questions for all you old hands here:

First, should I be worried about any of these things:

The oil filler cap in the engine has some (not much) condensation/yellow stuff on it. I read on Felix Miata\'s FAQ that this was due to driving style, and that longer drives would cure this? (Obviously the driving style of the previous owner, as I have only just got it )

The engine oil smells a bit of fuel, but again, I read that this is pretty common on rotaries?

The idle speed hunts a bit sometimes. I am not sure what other conditions the car was under, probably warmed up engine with air-con on.

Smoke from exhaust on startup. Not for long, but definitely some smoke.


Second, what can/should I do to improve these things?

Third, please don\'t scare me with "oooh you need a rebuild" as I have no money for one now! Yes, really!:p

In response to your questions, some thoughts:

1) a small amount of emulsion on the filler cap/neck seems to be quite common. I have had this on both my FDs, (\'92 and \'02 models).

2) Not sure about the fuel smell in the oil. I have read that some of the more modded cars have this  - probably due to the increase in fuel required for the increase in power.

3) Smoke from the exhaust on start-up is usual. A small amount, that lasts for a few seconds. It should clear pretty quickly.

4) The idle will of course hunt a little with the a/c on, as the compressor and the fans kick in and out.

If these are the only things you\'re concerned about, then you haven\'t got alot to worry about! From what you describe, it all sounds pretty normal!


Any descriptions of the car? Fresh import or one already in the UK?

Thanks a lot for the reply Andrew.

The car is a fresh import, a \'94 Type R2 bought from Newera\'s stock. It is pretty much standard mechanically, except for what appears to be an Apexi N1 exhaust, and a Blitz blow off valve. The suspension is Ohlins, the front nose and skirts are RE Amemiya Ad Facer II, and the wheels are Veilside Andrews Evolution V.

I am glad that all these things seem to be normal behaviour, as this is my first rotary and I am still a bit unsure exactly what it does normally (except for the blindingly fast function, I found that one myself!;) )

any probelmes that do occur.. go straight back to newera and get them to fix it... it is warrntied I suppose...

sounds like you aint got any problems... just the quirks of a good RX...
