I was just wondering if I could call on the experience of fellow rotary owners who have had an engine rebuild to help put my mind at ease...  My engine was rebuilt a tad over 500 miles ago now, so its booked in for its first service next week when the plugs, oil filter, oil etc. will be changed.  Whats concerning me, is that the engine is not as responsive now as it was prior to the rebuild.  Also, the idle still falls toward 500rpm until I turn the lights on, at which point it rises about 200 - 300 rpm and then slowly falls again, until I place it into first gear when it returns to 1000rpm.

I\'m not suggesting there is anything wrong with the rebuild work carried out as it was completed by the highly respected Carl Haywood, and the 2 minutes of smoke from the exhaust has been reduced to 5 secs or even none at all.  Plus, I guess keeping it continually below 3000rpm must not help cleaning out the carbon cack that builds up, negatively effecting smooth running?  Plus as its "running in", I assume it will return to a smoother state, the more miles are put on it as long as it is looked after properly?  It also doesnt help that one of the fans to the rad have stopped working and its pretty hot at the moment.

Basically, what experiences did you guys have following your rebuilds and during the running in phase?

Cheers all

why not just give Carl a bell and have a chat with him about these issues. I\'m sure he\'d be more than happy to go through any concerns you may have with you and explain why things are as they are.

Might be wrong, but when a rebuild has just been carried out the car is mapped accordingly to allow the running in period to go smoothly thus it might be mapped to run lean until the running in period is over after which the car will be remapped accordingly and more responsive.

Only my take on it, but please as OR says ring Carl to find out exactly what he thinks

Once you have done the running in period, and I take it you are running an Apexi PFC. Get it mapped and you will notice it being a lot better.

When I had mine rebuilt, it started off tight revving, bit lumpy, etc. but once everything was bedded in it feels a lot better.

Hi guys.  I spoke to Carl yesterday and have booked the service with him next week.  He is very helpful (and skilled) and we will discuss all this kinds stuff then, but I know he can get busy, and so to be as efficient as poss I thought I\'d ask here too.  Fish, I\'m not running an Apexi PFC, just a standard ECU.

cheers  :)

Has any porting been done on the engine? If it has, then I would recommend sorting some kind of ECU out. But I would guess that Carl has already recommended what you would need.

When I bought mine it had been ported and had a catback system all on the standard ECU. No problems with running lean.

Then had it decatted and induction kit fitted and it needed an Apexi at this point.

Carl and I did discuss porting, but much to my annoyance now (with my decision and my wallet at the time) I decided not to have any porting done.  All I have mod wise is an induction kit and large exit exhaust running the original cat.
