Has anybody uprated their rad cap to a higher psi ? If so what cap did you buy and from where. I\'ve tried Demon Tweeks but the caps thet stock are all to big. I\'ve contacted my local Mazda dealer and they have two listed £10.00 and £18.00 but cannot tell me the psi settings. I don\'t want to buy the £18.00 one and it be wrong as it is sale no return.
         Advice Please.

Did you use a Mazda 626 1.8 cap? Got mine for £4.50, 1.1 bar.

not so furious

was that a radiator cap or ast cap from the Mazda 626 or are they both the same?

Warthog

I got mine from Mazda dealer, i did not up the bar as it should be 0.9 bar. Mazda did do a higher bar cap but it caused to many problems. I took advice  and was told DON\'T do it stick with the standard, so thats what i\'ve done. My problems were all with minor leaks etc so i set too and replaced/ checked every where coolant could leak from and that has sorted the problems i had.
Hope this helps.:wave

the rubber seal on my ast seems fine as does the temp guage but I did need to top up the coolant level. Only had the car a few weeks so too early to tell how much collant (if any) i am losing. Had been driving for half hour the other day and stopped to get fuel. Then on starting \'add coolant\'  buzzer and light came on for 5 seconds then went out? Everything else seemed fine though.

Will just have to keep checking it i guess. Previous owner did say keep topping up and check weekly.

Coolant issues seem to be very common place. It only had an engine rebuild 4500 miles ago so cant be water seals????

Do a tread search for WATER LEAK ---   TREX-- put up this thread and a number of the questions you are asking are answered. Hope this helps.:wave

Carl

You should only use a 13lb or 0.9kg cap for the RX7.
the early cars came out with a 1.2kg cap and were changed on service\'s for the lower pressure. The original was found to be too high by Mazda.
The coolant system if correnctly bled of air should not need constant filling.

Thanks Warthog (apologies for thread hijack)

and Carl thanks. I have sent you an email Carl as i also need a service so it might be worth me coming round the M25 to see you.

Cheers

Whilst it can be argued that putting a higher pressure rad cap on the FD puts more strain on the cooling system, you\'ve gotta remember that it also increases the boiling point of the coolant...very important for an engine that runs as hot as the REW. Provided all your hoses are in good shape, it should be fine. I\'ve had no problems and it\'s also gotten rid of the nasty boiling sounds when you turn the engine off after a good run. To say that "mazda did it, so it must be right" doesn\'t hold water imho, don\'t forget it was mazda who gave the car an intercooler the size of a biscuit tin!!

Your prerogative. But if your car was making boiling noises then you may have masked something by putting a higher pressure cap on the car. Also Mazda have invested £Millions in the rotary so I think they know more than most about the product.

i agree with that to a point but at the same time 13 years of road testing has brought up issues that even their millions couldn;t uncover and I think the cooling system being woefully inadequate is one of the issues that has been raised. Even a stock car benefits from a bigger rad, better air induction and a decent sized intercooler. Another question is that once you have a bigger cooling system, would you benefit from increasing the pressure on that system? Not saying you would just that the goal posts change once your car has been modified,

MillSpeed

Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m not having a pop or anything, it\'s just I wanted to share my experiences with using a higher pressure cap and offer an explanation for why it might be worth doing. Like Oedipus said, there are shortcomings with the RX-7\'s design mainly brought about by cost and production constraints as well as emissions control etc.
