Hi,

I\'ve been doing a bit of research into specialists capable of performing high quality engine rebuilds with a warranty round my area.  Unfortunately, I can\'t really seem to find any!  Im based in South London, and I think the closest place to me is Rotechnics, but they seem to be rather expensive - and even though its worth every penny, I don\'t have that many pennies at the moment.  The lower inlet manifold gasket has a seal gone and is causing erratic idle and blowing, so as the engines getting on toward the 55K miles mark I thought I may as well pay to have the engine rebuilt at the same time and save £400 odd pounds in labour (I was told when last in ReWorx that getting to the lower inlet manifold gasket means engine has to come out).

Does anyone know of any reliable rotary specialists nearer to me who could perform a rebuild and the lower inlet fix for under £3000?  Rotechnics charge a base rate pf £2774 for basic engine rebuild and removal/refitting.  I see Shy Auto\'s are in Gravesend, but I don\'t know if they perform rebuilds? - Anyone had a rebuild done by them with great results?

All help would be much appreciated!  :wave

cheers

P.S. I was thinking about going for a simple street port whilst I was at it.  Im after reliable extra power!  Any suggestions if this is a good idea if I need the car to be hassle free as possible?!?

Ta!  :D

Shy auto dont do rebuilds unfortunatly, i live in gravesend & have been recomended Tim at RX motors for the cheapest reliable & guaranteed rebuild, and he does some porting work as well. The only problem is they\'re in farnham which is a fair way away, near bournmouth.
They charge £2500 for a full rebuild & £250 for porting. Going to book mine in with them in a couple of months.

Give Geff a ring at Reworx as well.
I\'M ALWAYS IN THE SH*T IT\'S JUST THE DEPTH THAT MAY VARY.

Thats great help, thank you.  ro284, who does Chris work for and would you mind getting me his/her number?  Sorry to be a pain, but you wouldnt happen to have Tim at RX Motors number would you spagram?  I cant find it!  Ill look into Carl too as he may be closer.  My problem is that Im moving very soon and have come to the agreement with my better half that I can spend no more than £3K on the rebuild and lower inlet or the car has to go!  :((  so Im pretty desperate to find the right chap as she has been VERY understanding about it all.

thanks!  :)

Hi eyedee, this is the number for Chris Philip, 07814019599 he worked for Tim at RX as i understand it, certainly did brilliant job on mine, 12 month warentee too, and i was lucky enough to watch how it was done, only as a one off, as he did it at my place. good price too, very thorough job, and job done quick! he worked for Mazda, and has designed and built his own with uprated twins now! recomend him highly,

Only commenting as I believe credit where credit due, but Carl was the inspiration behind Chris\'s twin set.
Chris saw my car at totb 2003 and saw the twin set up on my car that Carl had designed and suggested to me. Chris was very interested at totb and had a very close look at Carls ideas and work. Not knocking that. Then last year Chris arrived at totb 2004 with a very similar set up.

Please dont take this wrong. Just fair to let guys know Carl has been a big inspiration to a lot if the tuners on here and has given most of them the benifit of his experience.

Still great job done by Chris. Not taking anything away from him.

You do NOT have to take the engine out to replace the inlet manifold gasket. However, you do have to remove the exhaust and the Turbos.

Maybe Geff thinks its quicker to remove the engine to remove the other stuff.

Martiny

Oh, and I would get a compression test done to determine the state of the engine. There is no certainty that it will go pop at the (wrongly) romoured 60 k mark.

eyedee

Thanks for that advice Martiny.  I think I\'ll get it driven to the chosen specialist.  When it was compression tested 1000 miles ago it was producing low - mid 6\'s I believe.  What kind of cost are new turbos out of interest?  Are standards only slightly cheaper than a basic upgrade?

Cheers   :)

Chris works for himself now,his twin turbo setup is pretty neat!
Martiny is right about not having to get the engine out to change the lower inlet manifold gasket, but it is a long job. Also the compression test does not allways mean imminent engine failure, just that the engine maybe getting on a bit,and the rebuild cost does not change much if the engine is blown or not.
Also just out of interest how do you know that the inlet manifold gasket has gone?It maybe something else.
New turbo\'s are around the £4000.00 mk!so if the turbo\'s are shot then a good used set will be anything from £300-£500.00 which makes sense.
Regards
Carl;)
