1st generation RX-7's / first 12a rotary rebuild

buy a How Too Rebuild video!!!! saved my bacon. Waaay too many little tricks you need to do it correctly. Its not that hard, but easy to screw it up.
You will get opinions as to who\'s video DVD is "best". I bought several (Atkins, Mazdatrix - my fav, etc.)
There are Youtube ones too but can\'t speak to accuracy or completeness. Obv Atkins and Mazdatrix have a vested interest in keeping the Rotary community happy (ie: customers!). You get what you pay for - $30 well spent...

1st generation RX-7's / FB s2 Elford - 13" tyres?
October 08, 2010, 12:23:05 AM
Summitomo HTR200 205/60-13s very popular this side of the Pond - and cheap (here anyway @$70US ea). Love \'em on my SA. Just read that Pirelli is re-intro-ing 13" P-3 model, tho pricy I\'d bet...

1st generation RX-7's / Super 7\'s Limited Edition
August 30, 2010, 09:34:13 AM
Nice SA, tho, for the record it is NOT a "Limited", in spite the badge on the B-pillar. Its actually an "Anniversary X" model, a 1980 SA special that celebrated mazda rotary sales in N.America for 10 yrs. Wheels are aftermarket, as is stereo and glass roof (steel is correct, glass was Mazda USA option, not factory). She\'s a beauty, and every bit as rare as a _real_ "Limited", which was offered as a 79 model and only came in one color: "Beat Black", a sort of metallic black. If your buddy mounted the correct red "Anniversary X" badges instead of the "Limited" - he\'d be spot-on. Would post pics of both models but Guests aren\'t permitted the luxury :(

Cliff - no worries - what usually does me "in" on any project is the time-lag btw disassembly and RE-assembly!!!! All the "obvious" stuff one forgets. So yeah, digi-cam, zip-lock bags and labels are your Best Friends.

1st generation RX-7's / What Coolant to use
August 25, 2010, 07:40:33 PM
Cheers Dave-
appreciate clarification, tho confused how 81 FB gets slotted in with distinctive 79-80 SA styled cars - but lack of PM feature (??) on this site prevents me from asking you directly and I don\'t want to jack this thread...

cheers-
try this Thread from the RX7club Forum:
http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747161
need to scroll down a bit.
This is for the Mk1 (?) 79-80 SA, but technique is virtually the same for later RXs since most share same dash pad.

Also recommend access to a Mazda parts book (or on-line PDF) as these exploded diagrams REALLY help you visualize how it all comes apart. Not that difficult if you are organized...

1st generation RX-7's / What Coolant to use
August 25, 2010, 09:12:25 AM
I\'ve used Mercede\'s coolant (NOT cheap!) and deioninzed water for years in my 80 RX7.
50/50. benz stuff is crystal clear, which can be unnerving ;) Some amazing write up over here as too its long-life performance esp for alum/iron engines. Stories of 100K+ mi cooling systems looking brand-new inside. Never disappointed me here in -40F Alaska winters (stored, not driven!)

Yeah - agree that regardless, changing regularly is key. I do it every 3 yrs and thats just summer only driving here in the Great Land...

1st generation RX-7's / wing mirrors ?
June 05, 2010, 08:50:35 AM
Ian - I assumed "wing" meant JDM-style mirrors mounted outboard on the front of the fenders - not door-mounts. My NZ and Auz rotorhead friends consider "wing"="fender"= JDM-style. Does this mean something else across the Pond??

1st generation RX-7's / Anyone used LED bulbs?
November 07, 2009, 10:46:07 AM
I replaced all the bulbs in my 80 RX7 with LED 2 yrs ago - at some cost (!), only to have people telling me my rear brake lights weren\'t working. Well, they WERE, but to dim to be seen in daylight. Likewise other bulbs. These were supposedly correct replacements for Auto use. W-a-a-a-a-ay too dim even with big multi-LED clusters. went back to Edison-style incandescents ;) There ARE LEDs out there that do the job (as most new Audi\'s prove) - just nothing in the aftermarket - at least, in USA

1st generation RX-7's / 7 hours oil-change!!!
March 28, 2009, 08:54:28 AM
Mazda still sells the radiator hangers across the Pond here - not too much $$maybe $50US?
All (!) rotary mazdas (dunno about RX8) use the same short-style filter. Long one isn\'t available.  It only needs to be snugged up then 1/4 to a 1/3rd of a turn tighter - should be easy to remove then.
Fuel filter: you can buy hose clamps (some look like big plastic scissors) that pinch off the lines, making the change a leak-free event. Should be changed every spring - can create all sorts of odd behaviour if unchanged...
