In the light of Clive\'s superior knowledge it seems that that the new/rebuild is quite a tricky decision as they seem to be similarly priced.

I was thinking rebuild before but am now leaning towards buying a new engine from Mazda and getting a specialist to fit it or does that screw any chances of warranty?

Anyway I might need this soon as I am seriously considering putting a turbo on my 50k engine:eek:

Maybe I\'ll just buy a new engine now and keep it in the shed untill I need it. A couple of weeks after the turbo is fitted!

That is a good point but aren\'t they like £6k from Mazda? rotaryart has 4port and 6port brand new engines but not sure about any warranty and they run £3-4k just for the block.

Seems that going new might be a lot more expensive than a rebuild and I\'m sure I found on Google a place in Essex which will complete a refurbished engine replacement with 1 year 10k warranty for like £2500. However I cant find that now so I may have dreamt it!:Hammer

I suppose it depends where you take it Re:worx engine build page says upwards of £3000 for a FD3S TT. I imagine a renesis would be around that price but it would probably depend on the extent of the damage and the parts needed and therefore the labour hours to put it right.

^^^^What Ash said!!

I have a 53 plate with 53k on it and had it re-mapped at Re:worx a couple of weeks ago. It ran 220bhp stock! (apart from induction kit and sorry don\'t have the print out) Believe it or not, I think that is not really so much down hill over 50k miles. After the re-map and a new exhaust and hi-flow cat I creamed an R3 just this weekend and even a 55 scooby turbo couldn\'t get past off the lights on a 2 lane national limit (although to be fair I couldn\'t get past him either).

I\'m not worried at the moment either. I\'m just going to drive the car and look after it as recommended and best I can. If it goes it goes! apparently its too late anyway.

I will be getting a magnet though because they seem pretty cheap, it sounds like a perfectly good reason for doing it and can\'t do any harm.

Shame RX-888 lives in Australia or we could see whos engine is better:flamed

Quote from: iaint;597570Please try to post relaxed - no need for such heat over something so rare and trivial as an engine failure.

Good call. I would like to think that we have boiled, whistled a bit and are now set quietly on the side cooling down.

I\'m just going to make sure I have enough money for a rebuild for when my engine does go which hopefully won\'t be too soon and just enjoy the beep while it still lets me.

Quote from: RX-8888;597526How do you get poor compressions?
A busted seal?

You are right on that. I was thinking that bust water seals or worn springs or tips could cause low compression but I suppose it all ends up with lost compression through an apex seal.

Is this right?

There are 27 in the RX8OC but that is still a small % even with the condensed soup affect. Also They are not all due to lack of pre-mix and irregularly worn apex seals.

Nothing is perfect and I\'m sure a Mazda dealer would agree.

I have definitely experienced this cold limiter once when I dropped my door key on the floor just after starting and when I bent down to feel for it I floored the pedal with my foot just for a second and it revved to 4.5k bounced once and came back down as I panicked and bashed my head on the steering wheel. At the time I wondered why it didn\'t go higher but it is all clear now. :Hammer

Quote from: RX-8888;597112Sorry, I can\'t help that you are over or at a high mileage.

Sorry but I can\'t help that either but it is a very defeatist attitude to just say it\'s too late. I\'m not just giving up on a car I love that easy. We can\'t all afford luxury R3\'s even if we were worthy enough to get them in the UK.

You said yourself that you have known an RX8 run to 120,000 miles. How did the owner get this to run 70,000 miles with an apparently broken engine?

That is the information us 50k+ers need to know.
