So, some of you may know, that I've been commissioned to do some work on a 1980s Lada Riva
Long story short. A couple wanted to have a go faster lada made for their 21 year old son.
So a local mechanic was chosen, they had a 2 litre zetec with Yamaha R1 throttle bodies. Hooked up to an RX8 gearbox. All mounted badly, the exhaust was 3" from the floor, the home made cross member was too low. The ancillary belt was routed as such that the water pump ran backwards. The mot inspector refused to test it as wires were draped over the exhaust manifold. Horrible cut outs in the slam panel to accept an aftermarket rad held in place with cable ties.
The engine eventually blew up.
6 years later, the son is now 27 and his folks are 8k out of pocket.
I came recommended by the guy who painted the rotus as they work over the road from the spray shop.
2 meetings, some t's and c's agreed and were all set. I've convinced them to go the rotary route, using my 12a.
It's been collecting dust for 2 years. So it needs a good home.
I'll be doing the instal, getting the car, running, legal, safe and mot ready.
The car will be presented back to the son as a surprise at a car show a bit like the tv show l, car sos. My car paint guy will do full engine bay and body respray.
Mom and Dad are very excited at the prospect after 6 years of disappointment.
Let hope I can impress them. My first customers ! Lol
I'll keep you posted on here.
I'm finishing the rotus first so it looks like I'll start the lada feb/march. Complete my bit over the summer.

Good luck Jamie, big question is PP Bridge Street or stock port, Weber and a free flow manifold and away you go.
Quote from: clive on January 21, 2023, 05:46:51 PMGood luck Jamie, big question is PP Bridge Street or stock port, Weber and a free flow manifold and away you go.
My thought process is .....
Leave the engine alone !
If it runs just leave it.
I bought it from Tim at Rx motors and vouches it's a good one. I don't know it's history tuning wise but it come from an fb nicknamed the blue rocket or something.
Jon knows a bit about it.
I've been told stick with stock carb for mild tuned porting but remove all the smog rubbish from it.
The exhaust will be homemade free flowing stainless jobby.
If I'm honest I love the stock bee hive looking oil warmer is it ??? All the fins?? But they won't be there.
But!!! I also love the stock pancake ait filter housing. Just a flexi hose from it to in front of the rad so it gets cooler air not engine temp air

You're gonna miss not starting with chassis cad drawing though

Stock intake and carb are quite good. However, if I could, I would go with aftermarket part, Weber ot Dellorto. Unfortunately, those intakes are a bit pricey

Haha. What a refreshingly politically incorrect project! :))
Ladas are good fun. What part of the 80s is it from? Did you know you can tell by the size of the rear doors? Up until 1982-83 they were too big to fit. FIAT instructed Autovaz (LADA) to change the panel presses after so-and-so many units. The Russians responded to this piece of advice with their usual pragmatism. Thus, some model years have boot lids too big to fit (as had my 1972 Lada 1200 - it gave the wasps a way in to build their nest*), the late 70s and early 80s ones had the rear doors sticking out to ever greater extent: why change the panel press when you can adjust the door hinges instead (and pocket the savings)?
*Yes, those wasps used their HQ in the Lada's boot to launch various attacks on humanity. One fine day, I was stung while driving.

Special models
A Wankel engined Samara three-door hatchback, the 2108–91,[16] powered by a two-rotor VAZ-415 (with two 654 cc (39.9 cu in) rotors) was sold in Russia only, and only in very small numbers. With a five-speed gearbox, it was priced at 56,000 rubles.
You may have already seen these pics Jamie? They are of a rotary-engined Lada which was at Phil Blake's house in July 2021. I don't think Phil owned it, but he had been asked by the owner to do some work on the car.
May be of some vague use as reference.
Another fact I never knew until yesterday The Lada Riva rotary version was only available to certain government personal and the KGB !
Also the Riva itself is a derivative of the Fiat 124! albeit with 800 modifications.

We have helped with this conversion before to fit later boxes.
First issue is to find a Rocking Horse 12A Counter balance weight to bolt the flywheel on.
The flywheel will then be a bigger diameter plus the the clutch plate splines are different.

Yes they did. Basically, all rotary Ladas were only available for police and KGB.
Also they made big limo ZIL for KGB high offisials with 3 rotor on it
Interesting thing about Samara was that they made sivilian version. Dont know was they ever sold tho
More interesting is that in 2001, Lada wanted to enter BTCC with rotary 110 model, but they were not allowed. Dont know why

Yep. Russians had massive rotary engine production and research. Actually, it did end 2002.
They had 1 rotor in old Lada, 2 rotor at Riva, Samara, KGB limo with 3 rotor
Unfortunately, they were not allowed for sivilians. So they all have been destroyed

Not only Lada's have fallen victim to this slam panel treatment. This otherwise neat-looking Rx-2, for example. The owner hack-sawed off the whole center section in order to "make room for the rad". Messaged the seller with a question about the slam panel treatment. As we know, it does wonders for body rigidity. ::) In response, he simply removed the picture! Hope the new owner follows your example! :great:

So I posed a question to a fellow member the other day which was
On a 12a if you remove the pulley from the front of the e shaft that has the timing marks and you since rotate the e shaft . How do you know where tdc is ?
So remove the inspection cover near the inlet manifold. Rotate the e shaft and you'll see a cut out on the engine side face of the stock flywheel .
There is a prominent ledge on the cut out. Position it so the ledge is vertical or parallel to the mounting face of the inlet manifold and that's your tdc. Chuck the pulley back on and align with pointer on the front cover.

So now we have a 80s style 4 character red back lit LCD screen that is programmed once again from a micro processor taking square waves from the -ve on the trailing coil and displaying on the screen.....
.... here goes. There also a cycle button that can change the display from revs to outside temperature, press again and it turns to clock, press again to go back to revs. An F1 style green, amber, red shift light. ALSO an audible buzzer that goes off at 7k rpm. which incidentally can be changed to go off at any point with your phone through the cars own Wi-Fi ???
F sake i just wanted a rev counter lol
On a serious note, besides the box of tricks thats currently in production and an oil pressure gauge, all the electrics are complete. A loom which is subtle blend of old Skool agricultural Russian electrics and Japanese electronics. Not being disrespectul to Russian tech, even Richard is impressed with some of the methodology in which the electrics are mapped out.... "Jamie, this thing is backwards! its clever thinking, but its backwards!"
I cant help myself sitting in the drivers seat turning on all the controls and just talking jibberish in a half arsed attempt of a Russian accent, which then escalates into a barrage of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Polish then Swedish. Dont give up the day job Jamie...... too late!
Anyway, outisde of checking the dizzy timing and putting fuel in today, this thing may fire up !!! thanks Malclom for verifying plugs and positions from your FB so soon on your return from holiday.
Oh and I found the attached in the glove box, i think its instructions for unviversal fitting electric window winder kits
Just realised my update isnt that brief............
Ill take vid of it running if it starts
:)) :)) loving the latest update. Well done Richard on embellishing the spec, epic! So close to firing up now :13:

Does anyone know the ohms range of a 12a temp sensor from cold to what would be considered in the red ?
I've searched online and am getting very conflicting information or just downright incorrect
Thanks
J
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This pic is from the manual.
I have done a "real" test on a spare gauge and found the following:
100 ohm, needle just moves off its stop
40 ohm, about 1/4-1/3 up gauge, where mine sits at normal temp
22 ohm, about 2/3 up gauge (engine not happy, starting to overheat)
10 ohm, starting to enter the red mark zone.
So the top end calibration on my spare gauge is slightly different to the manual spec.
Thanks Malcolm that's great, Ive forwarded the info onto Binary Bill

So my last day of "freedom" start new job Monday.
Been plating bits on the dizzy and on steel parts on the front.
The eagle eyed amongst you will notice the rx8 style toothed wheel on the e shaft.
It's our own design with a Hall effect sensor mounted to the bracket by the front engine mount.
It's the same sensor that I use for the speedo on the offside rear hub of the rotus.
The lada is not equipped with a tacho, so it's aftermarket/DIY there too. There is nothing wrong with the stock set up of the trailing coil sending pulses to the stock RX7 gauges.
When you start using modern electronics to control equipment, then old school tech is very "noisy" electrically speaking and is very difficult to determine what is a pulse and what is noise or interference from other electrical items.
So this route was taken. It also acts as a test bed for the Rotangs engine.

So yesterday the car was presented back to the owner, it's already receiving lots of attention on petrol forecourts etc.
He is over the moon and even more static it's got a rotary in it.
I've only taken snapshots of video footage from yesterday but here's the owner pulling up after seeing it on the drive for the first time
