hi guys
bit of a long story but i inherited an Rx8 and dident really need another daily driver but wanted to do something with it, l like the way the front and rear subframes detach carrying all the suspension with them along with the power frame linking the front and rear (almost) solidly
anyway it looked a good candidate for a bit of a project soooo.... go kart for the back lawn was the answer not really interested in making it road legal ( well at this point anyway ) first thing i did was to drain the fluids then roll the car on its side and weld a length of box section from front to back joining the front subframe to the back subframe making sure that they could not move in relation to each other, i relise the power frame should be doing that but if the engine mounts are shot then it will flop about like a floppy thing :) while it was on its side i removed all the nuts that hold both the front and rear subframes in place disconnected the steering etc but left the top shock absorber mounts connected so i could gently lower the car back on to its wheels with them all crashing out to the floor before i was ready, once back on its wheels i undid the shock top fixings so i could just lift the body off leaving the complete drive train on the floor with the subframes locked in their relative positions to each other ....
so then the decisions start to have to be made...... looks very long so should i should i shorten the wheelbase etc etc

so being new to rotaries i have lots of questions , i see thee is an air pump that seems to push air into the exhaust manifold whats this all about and can i delete it dont need this cluttering up my engine bay ?
what else can i delete there seems to be millions of vaccum hoses criss crossing the engine ?
and are there any other options for inlet manifolds ? not looking for more power i want to get my bonnet line as low as possible, altenator looks it will relocate to where the air con compressor usually lives but the throttle body still sticks up in the air i have loads of room running back down the bellhousing and on to the gearbox it would sit nicely there

that power frame is such an irregular shape its hard to shorten it neatly,

its also full of lumps of steel, so whats all that about then ? some sort of vibration damping ?

anyway i removed 17" from the power frame and glued it back together temporary as i am pretty sure its going to have to shortened again as when i sit in the seat the gear lever is to far forward and wants to come back 6" or so

im going to run a manual steering rack so moving the engine back will help taking some weight of the front wheels reducing the effort required to turn and also it will add more weight over the back wheels which might be a good thing as i can see traction problems ahead
the other benefit of moving the engine and box is it buys me some space up front should this engine give me any trouble i can switch back to a piston engine ::) ::) ::)

No doubt you can get a different inlet but it will be costly .
Not sure anyone has relocated the alternator but it's done on an REW swap so would have thought so providing you can make a bracket

alternator looks easy enough but unless i can get get the inlet manifold and throttle body lower theres not much point,
will take the manifold off over the weekend and investigate, but me and costly dont mix well lol
air pump already in the bin ....

Excellent project.. But i would once happy get that prop ...or get another properly shortened and balanced by an axle shop. If it come apart and flails around it will cut you in half. I shortened the prop in my rx8 powered westy and the prob job was done by chards in Bristol forcabout a £100.00.

agreed im quite fussy about what gets near my butt and the thought of a prop doing 10,000 rpm making a bid for freedom dosent appeal at all
will buy a new prop when i know exactly how long it is
so can the mobiliser be written out of the ecu and if so who does it ?

thanks boosted i should be on the wiring in a couple of weeks or so will give you a shout... i did play with an mx5 and was going to make a chassis but in the end just chopped everything i dident need to make it run off it, got quite luverly with the lack of weight, trying to keep it out of the herbaceous border and on the lawn was testing indeed

where is the best place to buy mazda parts ? i need top and bottom radiator hoses, the two oil cooler pipes the run from the engine and 4 rear wheel bearing retaining circlips, do i just got to my nearest Mazda main agent or are here online suppliers around ?

lol ok will remember your first if i want to sell it, MX5 skate is parked at the other end of the barn its to wet out back to use at the moment it just chews the lawn up and i get ear ache ::) maybe next year we can have a day out and try the different buggies i have
a rear engine rotary buggy interests me im going to work on an adapter plate ready for the next project
so back to rx buggy what do i need from inside the car to make this buggy run, all i took out were the pedals and steering column the car came partially stripped and i think theres a fair few black boxes missing although i did remove most of the wiring loom

well not much progress this week, a few jobs appeared so thought it best to earn some money while the chance was there as i can see it being quiet for sometime,

i wasent planning on much in the way of body work but i found some wheel arches that sort of fitted and experience has taught me that you need front arches at least ..... the rear wheels will fling mud sure but its the guy behind who's got to deal with it lol ,, where as with the fronts it comes your way ::)

Cant see any prob with lpg tank as long as vented. Rx8 uses returnless system at 4bar fuel pressure.

Walbro 255 cheap enough. However...the rx8s fuel pot contain the pump and internal fuel pressure regulator. You really need that or you gonna have to fit an fpr and run a return line.

ok will investigate the adaptability of the stock pump, its still in the tank which i kept i discounted it because it dosent look deep enough to reach the bottom of my ( lpg ) tank not having seen one out of the tank i dont know if i could extend the pickup pipe down another 8 " or so

Yes you can it unclips and you can extend the pick up. Theres a syphon part you can junk. I did similiar in my alloy tank in my westfield.

You obviously have experiance from the other car, but seeing the tank, if its not foam filled you will need a swirl pot and then as Jon says just a Walbro 255 pump

i will remove the pump from the tank and have a looksy, might have to make a tool to undo that big ring thought it seemed very tight

Tricky bit is cutting whole and welding on studs and making a gasket. Holes can be drilled for said studs on outside rim of fuel pot.

so you drilled new holes in the top flange of the pump and bolted it to tank ? thats what i was wondering about or whether i had to use the screw down collar which would mean i had to make up a new screw thread to weld onto tank

ok so whats all this about ? ive got the brake pedal assembly out and there is a cable fitted to the top with a proper nipple but the steel cable only goes down and round the pivot of the pedal whats it for den ?

still ive got my space back now and pressing on, im setting up ride heights and need a couple of measurements off a standard RX8 sitting on level ground, first one is the gap under the front subframe to the ground at the front edge by the steering rack , and the second is at the rear to some fixed point on the subframe so i can mimic it , or the diff input flange to the ground although thats a long way under to reach i guess

Difficult for me to measure my 8 as my drive is gravel. But I still have my 3D cad models of all my subframe suspension pick up points from ground level if that helps ?

Just as well as its snowing here in Worcestershire, so dont fancy rolling on the floor.
