Still having trouble with my Turbo II... Just for a laugh, I took one of my scrap turbos, took out the spindle, and sealed up the ends so I could get the car running again.

Power seems well down on the 1st gen (but the intake isn\'t ideal for N/A!), but the biggest problem was after a short drive ending with a couple of slow miles, the exhaust side of the turbo housing was bright red. Guess this explains the turbo bearings getting fed up, cause any oil would have vapourised!

The only time I\'ve seen this before was on a 1st gen where the choke failed so it was running very very rich. The only other option I can think of is that the timing is out, but according to the marks on the pulley, it\'s spot in...

I\'m a bit at a loss for what to look at now...

Seems like it\'s a lack of spark on trailing plug for the rear rotor... Just need to find out if it\'s a broken wire or the ignitor that\'s gone...

Anyone know if I can borrow anything off a 1st gen to check it?

Hi Sean!

How are you?

I had this problem once, and it was because the timing was very retarded (15 degrees I think).

Was a Turbo II engine (with turbo operational) - when you say took out the spindle, do you mean the turbo blades and shaft?

Perhaps just check all of the wires connecting to the Crank Angle Sensor, see that every spark plug lead is producing a spark.

Then maybe take the spark plugs from your 1st gen. and put in the second gen.  You could also swap your plug leads from the 1st gen.

You could maybe also run some advance on the engine.
Thanks,

tsh

Thanks - that seems to have helped! It was starting to get to me!

Tweaked the timing to peak the revs, which now appears to be 15 degrees advanced - and after a brief check seems to have stopped the manifold turning red!

Still think I might have lost a coil though, but the 1st gen one will do till I can investigate further.

Question is, how can the timing marks on the front pulley be out by 15 degrees? Just checked the pulley only fits one way! There cant be any scope for the rotors to be offset on the gears? Surely the Turbo 1 didn\'t have different timing marks so a turbo II front cover would mean a 15 degree error?

Sadly the turbo blades are scrap - several broke off, so I took the spindle out and welded the head of a bolt in it\'s place. Fits nicey!

Slightly happier now anyway!

Good stuff Sean, how are you checking the timing? with the pick-up on the actual plug leads?  or from the coils?
Thanks,

tsh

Timing light with a pickup on the leads - so it should be accurate. The annoying thing is, when I swapped over the CAS to the new engine, I tried to keep it in the same place, and guess what - now it\'s lined up as it was on the old engine!

its normal for the stock turbos to glow red, i dunno what happens when you block it off like that though

I guess it\'s normal to get a bit of heat running at WOT, but I\'d expect a dull glow, not a bright orange! This was clearly visible in bright sunlight.

Adjusting the timing has given me more power, which I think means that is was definately out before - just not sure why!
