Well not the day i planned.....when i was on track its was awesome ....staying with to race boxsters easily and staying intouch with a 911 turbos s new 1! he had me on the straights but  i managed to stay intouch by catching up in bends.

BUT frikin oil surge...spent alot of time in the pits cleaning up oil.

Had a Chat at lunchtime with Clive when i was basically ready to set fire to it and followed his advice junked the check valve....better but still 4 laps filling and blasting out all over engine bay and smoking so retire to pits and clean up.

New rad was awesome 82degC everytime i looked...

got 75 litres of super duper going spare....lol

in my desperation shoved a knotted rag in oil filler before lunch and removing checkvale.....messed up the breathing....shes puffing smoke ocassionally on idle now, so Ive got to run it to clear that out or ive damaged the engine possibly...at 3pm i quit and went chatting and spectating.....

mmmmm is how i sum up the day...

Ahh not so good dude,

I sent my irons to a engine building company for them to be lapped... they cam back skimmed rough like a cylinder head.
I tried to smooth it all down as much as possible. it lasted 2k of fast road and track before enough was enough. the full oil control ring was chromed not just 0.5mm of the edge haha.

It knockhill coming to the hairpin in over run it would build up smoke in vaccume. exiting the hairpin it was like a smoke screen. no oil on track but the amount of smoke was so bad that they had to black flag me. they said the only reason was the couldnt see the bottom corner once i left it. naturaly when on boost there was no smoke.. blowby or what :D haha

Have you looked into the check valves that plum into your exhaust? Work like the venturi effect. when driving the exhaust pulls out any oil vapour and causes a vac in your "crank case"  maybe worth a try.  does it smoke on ovr run or boost? Posible turbos?

Grant Monkhouse

Is it time too drain it back how clive does?

Off topic, how much do you think a rolling chassis mx5 NC is worth? Asking for a friend...

Never good to hear problems Jon and fingers crossed everything is fine after a good run.  Do you have a catch can? I was spraying oil everywhere until i fitted one and i realise it doesnt solve the problem but at least it catches it. Tbh the last few trackdays i ran i kept the oil level well below half and that resolved 99% of the oil surge but again not really a fix.

Do excessive not make baffled sumps? I was sure i was starting to look into them before i took mine of the road.

Nc are getting cheap mate whilst nb are stagnating and na are rising ....i sold for my wifes friend an 06 1800 with a blown zetec init...( its a ford engine in mk3)... for a grand.
So if its stripped rolling shell...not alot mate...few hundred???. If hes after a rolling shell for a project buy a blown 1 and strip and sell the ancilliaries and get a free shell at the end...?

Car wise smoke on braking b4 bend so overun was after i shoved the rag in oil filler in desperation....no smoke from exhaust before...but easily confused with oil escaped from catch tank breather and all over right hand side chassis burning off externally on exhaust...
Ive been going at it the wrong way trying to baffle the oil filler tube....its got to Breath...else all i do is increase the pressure and then the velocity of the oil being carried...
I need to run it up today and hopefully clear the oil from the exhaust ...if it doesnt ive damaged an oil control ring or summit...as it stands at mo im getting on idle the occasional puff of blue smoke for 5 secs ish...so hopefully just oil in the oil...ic been off and pretty clear no oil in there ...so dont think my tubbys....
Its got worse seen the sumps been resealed? Which makes me think excessive blowby on boost...but on road no oil in catch tank? Its a track thing on semi slicks...
Yep Clives return defo needs doing...or i need a old bed sheet every trackday to mop it all up.
Gonna find a secluded layby latter and rev it with oil filler cap off and see what comes out filler...wont be generating boost but should give me and idea of pressure in the sump.
Bitter sweet really the laps i got were mega everything else is on point...brakes handling temps dialed in lovely...
Gotta say the Marshalls were great i explained i was having issues and asked them to black flag me if they saw smoke etc and we did this 4 times so they were very accomadating instead of just throwing me off...lol

Hi Neil, its nice to know this is an rx7 issue and not just me ha ha...
This session was with a redesigned top mounted catch tank feeding the original catch tank in the top left of bulkhead....it literally blew through to 2nd can and out the breather down the back of the bulkhead all over chassis and exhaust and back tyre...i put a check valve in oil filler which in theory should shut off the surge and then open to breathe and drain...it made it worse....car has an re speed baffle oil filler as well....thing is not a lot of oil 500ml but it goes everywhere..
I too ran lower oil but on 1 corner at combe power right hander after essess chicane im seeing oil pressure fluctuations so needs to be half way at least..
