Jon

I think it was a short around the battery.

The fire was from the battery up with the fans melted. Looking at what i can see it would need a new front wiring harness, bonnet, rad & fans, and various other bits its still holding water and all the belts are ok. I got to it within 10 mins of it starting my neighbour called me and kept the hose on it until the fire brigade came.

I will see what the insurance company say if they will repair it that would be the best outcome. I would be very tempted to keep it if I get the chance and depending on how much it would cost to buy back and the cost of the parts above. Any ideas on the cost of a front harness

I had spent the evenings of the last month cleaning up the underneath and treating the it to  a couple of coats of por15 I refurbished the wheels etc.. Hence am gutted

Yes gutted for you mate. Very sad. You should be able to retain the salvage just be prepared to haggle and play hard ball. Its will prob be cat c due to age. This way you will get part payout and keep the car.
Parts should be plentiful and resonable wouldve expect to that much atall. Id change all rubber parts as a matter of heat damage. Im more than happy to help and so is Chris.  I have bought repaired a few cat c d cars as we have a salvage yard here in Westbury....plus when my evo was written off i retained salvage and repaired myself....in the end i had same car fixed and good few grand in my hand! Give me call and i can talk you through process. Only issue is re insuring....youll have to change ins companies.....as if any happens 2nd time they wont payout again..

That's something to consider i'm hoping it will get fixed. I work at a glacial pace on my car what with the age of my kids.

Will let you know what happens.

The car is a total loss. I'm just waiting for the insurance settlement team to get back to me. I recon it would cost £2000 all in to repair it me doing the mechanical fixes and getting the body work done elsewhere.

What do you think I could buy it back from the insurance company from?
What would it be worth after. There is a cat c FD on autotrader currently for 8k. That's more than mine is insured for.

I watched an fd go for 3.5k in salvage that 1 is now on ebay unrepaired....by you buying it back ins company is saving storage and transportation.  You need to tell them you want to retain salvage....let them offer a buyback fiqure and be prepared to haggle.  If insured for 7 then id be trying to deal at 2k buy back and 5 as settlement.

So the insurance company are giving me the agreed value for the car and letting me keep the salvage for free..... yes free, they say because of the age its not worth anything to them.... pretty much made up my mind to get another car too....
