Hi guys

So its mot time soon and the car definitely has a blown exhaust, so its a good opportunity to change the exhaust and make a couple of changes as the car is bone stock and ive heard a few changes make all the difference to the cars drivability.

So I was looking to pick up some aftermarket headers( release a bit of power) and get a custom mid section made as its this section that needs replacing. I want the car to retain as much of a stock sound as possible. How likely is this?

Ive also seen on the internets that custom made headers aren\'t as good as the aftermarket off the shelf headers that you can pick up. Any truth in this?

I\'m also looking to changing the viscous fan for an electric fan, as it sounds like its sapping alot of power for the wee rotary unit !

So is there any basic upgrades ive missed, ideally I want to retain as stock a look as possible just now.

Thanks

Richard

I would look at the Racing Beat off the shelf stuff for sure. Clive can help you get those through MRP;)

They have different designs for different upgrade choices, google racing beat and search their site.

Electric fan is a good idea, use of a thermocouple will ensure it comes on and off at the right temp and you could add an override switch onto the setup so the fan stays on for longer if stuck in traffic or the engine gets much too hot

Direct wiring the headlights is a good upgrade use the stock wiring to trigger a relay

I have a stainless system and the noise is quite nice, I had to reweld it quite a few times. I\'m looking at breaking the car, it was partly made by WGT and the mid-pipe was made by TGS. I\'ve had the backbox opened, repacked and then rewelded (looks a bit frankenstein) and I had to reweld the manifold to suit a 12a (had a 13b).

Can\'t really atain that it isn\'t leaking on the manifold since I last welded it, but nothing a mig couldn\'t fix.

Would probably only want £100 plus postage for the whole system because you may want to weld it up again.

I\'ve also got a S3 double core radiator with an electic fan on, would want £100 for that with the thermostat controller and fan too !

Plus I will have an uprated headlight system available with almost new lenses and relays all wired up, its worth £70 (headlights on own are worth this).

What advantage does this have? And how are they wired just now? I remember having a bad time of the headlights on the fc I had...

Yep I can\'t carry on having the car in the back garden ! Pulling all the good bits off the car and scrapping the shell :(

The headlights go through the switch in the dash and are run through quite thin wiring. If you swap to have these control a main relay there you can run a direct power lead to the headlights giving them more juice. I had new lenses and uprated H4 bulbs as well. Being used as a daily all year round made a huge difference.

Thanks shaun,

I\'ll look into the headlights mod, luckily my cars not a daily so notbused on cold dark winters nights often :)

The radiator sounds good, I assume the s3 has a single core rad as standard too? Im not sure about the exhaust though, the rear section is fine on mine, I just want to ditch the thermo reactor and standard headers..

The racing beat stuff is nice, it also comes as a kit you can weld yourself.

The S3 has a full height single 19 x 3mm core tube (thinking off the top of my head) and when I had mine recored the guy squeezed a double 19x3mm core.

re japi

Rich, if you have airbumb still on, lose it. Its useless, weights alot and doesent do anything.
Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.
