Hi Guys,

Hope to be getting my Rx in a couple of months and I have some questions.

Firstly re BOVs

Are they easy to fit? Is there a special pipe I need to have to fit it on?
Silly question, Because the car is a Twin turbo does that mean it needs 2 BOV kits, I have looked at numerous sites and none of them have said you need 2 so I am presuming not? I am looking at the HKS ones at the mo but does anyone else have any other recommendations?
Is there anywhere on the net that you can listen to what the BOVs sound like?

Also a couple of queries with Air Induction kits

I have fitted one on my old Escort (presumably the same principle on fitting), I presume you need 2 though or is it one kit with 2 filter heads on? I have been looking at HKS again or the Blitz cone filters are they good?

Sorry about the silly questions, I hope to be as knowledgeable as you guys one day !!!

Cheers

Ok.  You inly need 1 bov and yes it is easy to fit.  Buy your bov with the bespoke fitting kit from the distributer.  If you look at the back of your airbox at the smaller pipes coming from it you can see the stock bov.  Small black Denso (usually) thing.  The one on the left.  There is another similar looking thing on the right closer to engine block.  Not that one!!.  pull old bov off put new one on and block off the hole in the back off your airbox with supplied bung. Job done!
Stick with recognised names and you cant go wrong HKS, blitz, etc.  I have heard both and both sound well.  Have Blitz on mine.  Prefer the sound of it myself.  Bit less tinny.

Induction kits come in 2 different styles.  Twin cone like HKS or Blitz and "siamesed" which puts all the pipework into one big filter.  No real difference performancewise between the 2 styles.  Lots of debate whether ind kit makes any difference on a rex due to heat soak.  I have Blitz sus twin.  No power gain noticed but nice noise!:D  Best would prob be GruppeM but circa £500.  Ask MintyFresh;)
Down to personal pref from there!  Good luck and spend wisely!

Cheers for your help Mate

You have cleared everything up and also saved my finances !!!

Thanks,

No probs mate.  Let me know what you opt for.  I am at present trying to rig up some sort of cold flow piping to cover the induction kit.  When (if) I succeed I\'ll pm you some pics n stuff of how to go about it and what benefit it has, if any.
By the way I do recommend Blitz stuff.  Quality is second to none.

Cheers,

I am in Norfolk, there are a couple of local tuning shops nearby I will try and see what they have to offer eg SCA Road and rally.

Any ideas of where I can find what the Blitz/HKS BOVs sound like?

Or the exhausts like the blitz NUR Spec?

gmogle

found this site for the sounds of the BOVs

http://www.blowoffvalves.com/

Just thought I\'d let people know.

No idea about websites for exhaust noises.  All I can say is that the nur spec sounds very well with a straight through system. VERY loud mind.  Wouldn\'t like to be doing a lot of motorway work with one.  Comes highly recommended mind.  I\'d have one, but then my rex is a toy, not a commuter:D
Have you made a decision on the bov

gmogle

The HKS one will be the weapon of choice.

Every says that the 5 inch Blitz one is loud. Like you mine will be a toy aswell so I wont do any serious motorway mileage.

Was gonna pop to JAE and see if anyone has one to see what one of them are like.

Cheers for your help.

Just like to say thanks too for the tips, very useful and has explained to me how the siamesed set-up works.

Is there no way to improve the gains from the induction kit? Could you elaborate just a bit on heat soak etc? Is it caused by the location of the filters etc, and is there anything that can be done to effectively shield them? The GruppeM kit looks fab, and appears to be better as the filter is contained in the CF housing...would that help?

Finally, has anyone come across a set-up that provides a nice sound under load but not so intrusive as to make motorway driving a lesson in pain?

Thanks!

Forget about BOV\'s and induction kits and spend the cash on some thing worthwhile :rollin

Spend a few hundred quid getting the car serviced and looked over when you get it instead, might save you some money down the road and should give u an idea of what money you need to spend on it to get it in good working order....

If you have to have the pssshhhhhhht you can just disconnect the pipe that goes from the stock BOV into the back of the airbox - hey presto...pssshhht :)

I have a straight thru HKS front pipe, custom mid pipe and decat Blitz Nur Spe R muffler. It\'s extremely loud without the bung in the end and does give a headache as soon as you hit 80mph on motorways! Normally have to drop down to fourth to ease the blood coming out my ears!:p

I dunno what it\'ll sound like when I add a new intake!
Cheers

Where to start. Um. 20b boy stop being so old!!!:D Just Kidding We know the debate but induction kits make nice whistly sounds and bovs make nice BIG ptsssshs.  Besides it all looks mighty spangly under the bonnet. lol:p

Nice to have a bit of first hand experience on the nur spec r.  Have to say I like the idea of ear bleeding noise.  I had an MR2 before the rex and it had a japanese touring car exhaust which was basically a big pipe from the manifold.  no silencers or can.  Stupidly loud.  People loved it.  It was the main reason the bloke who bought it, bought it.  It set off car alarms!!!

FD Dreamer.  Heat soak is when hot air is drawn into the engine via the induction kit.  As I am sure you can imagine the ambient temp in the engine bay is a wee touch higher than outside. IE from a direct cold air feed.  Concentrate, heres comes the science bit.  (remember those adverts. Sh1t!!!) Hot air is less dense than cold air and therefore doe not allow as clean a burning of fuel hence a loss in performance.  So cold air = big bang / hot air = smaller bang meaning less force pushing engine round.

Right oh! Add to this that the radiator on your 7 (as stock) sits at a 45 degree angle right underneath where the induction kit sits and feeds it hot air! Arse!:(

GruppeM has a carbon heatshield to protect against this and and a direct air feed from the front of the car to provide cold air like the standard airbox.  But with a cone filter (siamesed)

Set upwise as I have said I have Blitz sus power induction and bov with an Apexi dunk cat back which creates some noise but quiter when you need it to be.  I WANT A NUR SPEC!!!:D

Hope thats cleared a few things up.  It feels so good to be useful,  Don\'t know anything else mind!

Cheers mate, that was very helpful. Seems like it might be worth shelling out the extra £ for a GruppeM system, though it\'s also fair to say a remap and test would produce a fair old gain!

Thanks again for the heat soak explanation (get ready for the science :rollin ) it\'s basically as i thought, makes sense that hot air is always going to impair performance, but it\'s interesting in seeing why the FD has a particular weakness, especially regarding the radiator. Why was it set up in that fashion? A design flaw?

Wouldn\'t exactly call it a design flaw as such.  Perhaps just a way of squeezing everything in.  Lots of stuff packed into that wee space!  It could probably be helped with an aftermarket front bumper with bigger air intakes.  One of the main issues is the lack of clean airflow into the engine bay.  All air flows through something first like the radiator, oil coolers etc.  If you could get a straight airflow it should improve things a bit.
Bear in mind future plans when looking at the GruppeM as you will not be able to fit a front mount intercooler with it as it gets in the way.  Its a load of money to shell out to then disgard at a later date.

smarts

Alternative to thy Gruppe M - Racing Beat do a cold air intake thing for about £100 that basically takes cold air from the front of the car - you splice it into the intercooler intake and then forces more air through the standard airbox. When i put one of these in mine i changed the standard air filter for a k&n one. No extra noise I am afraid, but it does seem to have made the car a whole lot smoother.
