Hi all,

Im new on here. Im looking at selling my MR2 turbo and getting a gen 3 RX7.

It appears that there are loads of different types of RX7 to go for, like Type R, S, etc.

Could anyone explain or point me in the right direction what kind to go for pls?

Im after a manual, pref black, with all the extras eg. aircon etc, and L reg or newer. Will spend up to £8/9000 if necessary but must be immaculate for that price.

Whats the best kind to go for and what to look out for when buying?

Also are cars that have been rebuilt better to buy or does that mean theyve been thrashed? How often do they need rebuilding?

Would prefer relatively standard as well, except possibly filters, BOV, and exhaust.

Thanks guys I appreciate your help.

Probably better to go for one thats been done or have some back up funds incase.  Need rebuild approx 60k miles but it depends on so many things...

If it has filters and exhausts then its probably going to need an ECU too unless its just a cat back.

Gav,

Check these sites for 3rd gen rx7\'s, for the price you are willing to spend you can  find a very good 3rd gen, preferably you should look for one thats either been rebuilt or with low mileage, although for that price you should be looking for a rebuilt one. Normally around 60k before you require rebuild may even stretch to 75k depends how its been looked after?

Theres a few other sites too but canna remember them at the mo, have a lokk around and see what you think mate.

Autotrader site will also lead to other imports websites too.

Thanks Gurj, those links are a great help.

Also mate, what is the last year/reg that the Rx7 was made. Is it M reg?

In your opinion, would my £8/9k buy me a rebuilt/low mileage M reg?

Thanks again

M\'95 may of been last of the UK cars (not many of \'em thou 120sumin as i recall) but the RX7 was made up to 2002 again as i recall but going be needing quite a big budget for one of them babies.....http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_5_10.gif\' border=0>
Hard to say wot you\'d get for that money as the devils always in the detail as they say.......
I\'m sure you can pick sumin very fruity up for that £ but it\'s only fair to say there are no guarantees with this or any other performance car really......
Good luck with yer quest thou it is a noble one :cool

Cheers Si,

Ive only had the MR2 turbo since last August but went out in a RX7 for the first time yesterday and was amazed.

RX7 has similar kit of power to mine but delivery is totally different. Think Ive narrowed it down to either a Type R, RS or RZ (preferably RZ) in black or silver.

Just got to find one now

Thanks for the advice

RZ\'s are all black.  They dont come around that often.

Gav,

I used to have a MR2 twin entry turbo jobby, i think its a natural progression onto the rx7 as both are rear wheel drive and are fairly bad in the wet!

Also the seating position in both is almost identical although the rx is actually better, just found the MR2 was getting to easy to handle mine was making around 310bhp which is no mugg, but wanted something very quick!!!

As far as your budget goes the most important thing to remember is DON\'T RUSH IN !!! hold out until you find the exact car you\'re looking for, maybe in waiting time you might even manage to stretch the budget further??

Didn\'t note where about you are based but i\'m sure somebody off here will be happy to go along with you to check out a few rx\'s as we\'re all quite helpful (not Scoobi Si though:rollin )

Goodluck with it mate, just dont rush in and prob not good idea to buy from garages who dont have much knowledge on the rx7.

Funny enough no, thats why i said "around":rollin

Brian, seriously though great cars to drive MR2\'s, power delivery\'s very good just the handlings very dodgy worse than the rx TBH!!
It was very quick though i\'d guess around 5secs 0-60 didn\'t do 1/4 mile as i\'m one of those people who are careful not to break stuff - but i guess going out for a blast down the roads prob the same??

It was owned by a doctor b4 me and he had it modded up for sunday use, sold it as wanted something quicker and bought my first rx from that sale.

How much power you hoping for?? from the white single??

Gurj,  Rams!?!?!?!  Tut tut tut. :D

Im actually from Ilkeston/Westhallam way but closer to Notts than Derby (and a forest fan) :o

Ive probably even seen your car knocking around at some point if your local. Where about you from and what reg/colour is your car?

If you could have a trip along mate, I would really appreciate a second opinion esp as you own a RX7 already.
I\'ll let you know when Ive found a decent one if thats ok?

Did you notice a difference in performance from the MR2 to the RX7 then? What do you prefer? On paper, they have similar performance figures.

310bhp is a decent figure for the MR2 and relatively easyish to achieve. Boost increase etc etc.

Cheers

Nevr had the pleasure of being in one but I have heard that they are very quick. Hnece I was really looking forward to my clash with the 450bhp one at rotorstock but guess my transmission chickened out. When I get the white one back on the rollers I expect around 390 rwhp. I only need about 30 minutes on the rollers as I don\'t have much to finish off.

Just been looking on //www.rotaryimports.com and saw this one: http://www.rotaryimports.com/html/japan/jap5.html

Is this the right kind of price for the year as Ive seen some that are 1994 for about £6k with rebuilt engines?!?!

Cheers

Hi Gav,

Yea be happy to come with you if required mate, the car you\'ve just shown is actually one of Brians ( BNA ELLIS) and his cars are normally very good, the asking price for that car is about right, the ones you\'re looking at for £6000 are not going to be that good unless its a repossession order or something???

I have to warn you lots of people who have bought low priced rx7\'s do struggle with them as there is some problem of some nature? Also could it be this cheap as the rebuild was no good or done by a bad company ie - Hurley\'s??

The one you\'ve seen at rotaryimports looks very nice if in doubt give Brian a ring and ask away, Brian\'s easily approachable and has much knowledge in the rx7 area.

I know others have seen my car so apologies, but heres a pic for you Gav - you might have seen it around??
