Hi I\'m tib.

Don\'t currently own a rx7 at the moment I have a r33 GTR, had it for 3 yrs now and feeling the itch for a rx7 always liked the shape and the fact they run a wankel rotary. My plan at the moment is to sell the r33 buy a stock rx7 as a nice daily and build a track only GTR.

But after talking to a few friends who have had rx7 they assure me that I won\'t want a GTR after a Rex.......we will see.

So anyone who\'s gone from a GTR to a rx7 please let me know how you found it and pros and cons.

Also if anyone wants to see my car its here http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3904622.htm

I had an r33 gtst many years ago, running I think 365bhp give or take. Like yourself I\'ve always been intrigued by the Rex but put off by all the horror stories I heard online. After a year or so I cracked a conrod and after much thought decided to sell as spares or repairs and bought a stock-ish Rex.....driving it instantly got me hooked, in comparison with skyline your sitting very low, feels like a proper race car, the power to weight ratio was instantly felt, very nimble and fast off the line compared with the r33. I admit even though I couldn\'t wipe the smile off my face for about a month, everytime I drove it I was scared to put my foot down with all the horror stories in my head, every little noise I heard I\'d think it was the engine was gonna give up on me.

After a few months, car still sweet as a nut, I decided to go on a midnight run down the motorway......simply awesome, everything about the car feels perfect, a stockish rx7 scared the hell outta me more than my r33 did!!

Short of it is, once you drive a Good Rex, you will never go back! Truth be told piston or rotary it don\'t matter, you buy a dog of a car it\'ll let you down. As long as you take your time, buy a well looked after car, and are prepared to give it more attention than your conventional piston car, you will fall in love with it.

Pros and cons for me are.....

Pros.
-Lighter car
-handles better
-stock for stock a faster car
- interior well designed and great feel
-plenty of specialists and parts available to get what you need.
-not many rx7s are seen these days, r33s starting to become the new subarus lol

Cons
-more regular servicing
-no rear seats (well who cares)
-mpg sux (but if your buying a Rex economy isn\'t a priority to you)

The r33 feels very bulky, slow off the line and ugly compared. If your prepared to sit there everytime you take the Rex out for 10mins to warm up the engine, and cool it down properly after a run, change the oil n sparkies more regular.....then take the plunge!! You won\'t regret it!!

Just plz plz research them well and when buying one take someone knowledgable with you, there\'s a lot of abused examples out there.

Let us know what you decide :)

Rotary - add more fuel and air plus supporting mods, 1.3 litre engine will make close to 800bhp+ if you want all out power, no faffinging around with forged internals and no valvetrain to slow the engine and air down.

People think that the rotary engine is unreliable, its only the case if the owner doesn\'t look after it, some owners believe that 20 year old radiators and fueling are still fine to use when pushing +100% power through the engine, its usually the ancilaries like fueling or cooling that take the engine out rather than the engine failing.

My FC has done 89k miles, compressions of 7.2 on the front rotor, 6.9s on the rear - a new engine produces around 8.5s, if you look after a rotary engine it should outlast a piston engine but its ment for performance.

All the Honda guys go: VTEC kicked in yo! as they show off their 9k redlines.....Mazda introduced a buzzer when it got to the redline to let the driver know it got there as its so smooth you don\'t really notice.

The engine itself is really simple, just some bearings and seals - see below for a complete engine (minus the apex seals and water seals)

Just having a look at the specs on your car, it seems you have spent quite a bit to get to 410bhp, on a rotary as long as you keep the fueling correct and the temperture in check it would just be a case of bolting on a larger turbo to get that sort of power.

Im sure there will be someone at a show who will take you out in their RX to show you whats what, the engine makes a chunk of power top end (much like 2 strokes) but you can increase the porting for extra low down, its not a massily torquey engine but it just keeps reving - its not like you need to tow a caravan with it :D

Might be worth just having a nose around the 3rd gen section and see whats what :)

Thanks for the reply.
Been reading up on them for a while now. Just got to sell the GTR now.
Couple of things I would like to ask
1 economy isn\'t an issue as my GTR only does about 17mpg but a heads up would be nice so worse or better than my GTR??

2 you said no back seat? I was under the impression some rx7\'s have back seats albeit small ones?

3 do you know anyone who wants to buy a r33 GTR lol

Been looking around abouton the bet at everything rx7 related for a while now, was hoping to find a rx7 owner looking to pox up to a GTR with a bit of cash my way so I could put my mark on the car straight away.

Is this car known on here?  http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3917830.htm

I wouldn\'t on that car, you won\'t get a history and for that kind of money you want a lot more detail.

If your not busy on the 12th then bring a helmet and a crisp £10 note and sign on as a passenger at Oulton Park. We\'ll get you out in a passenger seat, not sure if anything close to stock is turning up though !

Will try and make oulton on the 12th if I can, been looking in the for sale section on here and on Ph, hoping to find someone looking to go from a rx7 to a GTR but most people seem to be selling up and there Skint so they don\'t want to put money towards my car :( .
I\'ll just have to hold out till the GTR sells.

Motorway driving your looking at anything between 20-25mpg sometimes more in some cases an whether driving on or off boost. Town driving around 17 mark all depends on how the car is running, as soon as you modify, shove a secondary rail in there figures change.

Models came with rear storage bins and rear seats, if you can call them that. You could maybe fit someone in the back....if you cut their legs off!!

I\'m short (5\'8") so as long as my sons (5+9) can fit in the back for the odd short journey then its fine, mpg wise it sounds similar to a stock GTR so I can cope with that.

you wont get anyone behind the driver!! may get them in on passenger side one behind the other, but defo not the other half aswell!

I have 4 adults in a 7 (short journey), not the most comfortable but it can be done!
