Hi again :-)

Basically I had problems getting the car to start. I found out with the help from you guys that it was the choke butterfly not closing when the choke was on. I fixed that problem and now it starts great from cold. I let it warm up, adjusted the idle speed and mixture but now when I try to start it from warm it just turns over without starting. I have to pump the throttle a little to get a bit of fuel in the engine before i attempt to start it to get it running again.

Any ideas?

wiggman2030

Sorry I forgot to mention it also doesn\'t idle once i start it from warm too

Normally I would have said this may well be low compression but as this is a Gen 1 and you say you pump the pedal, get a bit more fuel in and it goes, check the fuel filter as I seem to remember this used to be a favorite for stopping Gen 1\'s starting etc

hope this helps

as Clive said always worth checking the fuel filter next to the pump, you shouldn\'t need to pump to much to start from warm, presuming you have pulled the plugs and clean them just check the carb breathers and timing

thanks for the reply guys :)

I recently changed the fuel filter so that should be ok. I don\'t understand why it doesn\'t idle either.

If I let the car warm up without turning it off. The car runs and idles fine. As soon as I turn it off it just turns over when I try to start it again. Once I\'ve pumped the pedal a few times it starts but fails to idle. it just dies if I take my foot off the accelerator.

I will check the timing and breathers but I can\'t understand why it\'s fine one minute and not the next :(

There is a hot start relay which is a motorised unit; pulls a cable across to the carb to give the throttle a tweak without driver intervention.

It\'s on the nearside inner wing.....attached by a cable over to the carb side.

Adjustments of mix and idle speed should be done at a fast idle (1000+ rpm) when good and hot.

Also there should be a bakelite spacer between carb and it\'s manifold....supposed to stop too much heat vapourising the fuel.

Keep us posted please

I think I know what you mean, I Notice that the throttle pedal does pull in slightly when I turn the engine over. Is that what the relay does? I hope my engine isn\'t knackered. It seems to be fine when it\'s running lol

I\'ve got a perectly set up 1st gen Nikki carb including the rats nest that I\'ve just taken off my car as I\'ve fitted a turbo. It\'s set up perfectly for the emissions / mot and it\'s easy to just unbolt your carb and rats nest then drop this one on..... half an hours work.
Yours for £25.00 plus whatever the Royal Mail charge to deliver it.....  if you want it.
Nikki 4 barrel carbs are a nightmare to set up and you could be messing about with your for the next 6 months and still not get it to run properly.
At least by fitting a known good carb and rats nest, you can cross that off your list if you still have problems.

Hi again,

Yeah to be honest I think someone has been messing about with the carb already. There is stuff blanked off. Parts missing, the choke didn\'t work before hand. Now I can get it to idle when it\'s warm and I have to pump the pedal a few times to get it going. I kept trying to sort it out but the more times I tried the harder it got to start until eventually it didn\'t start at all until it was cool again. It\'s a bloody nightmare lol. I\'ll mail you about payment etc

Cheers

Sorry but this sounds really noobish lol I think that my rats nest has been removed as well. I\'ve been looking at pictures of RX-7s with the rats nest in and I don\'t notice any of the bits haha. If I have a carb with the rats nest included would it just be a simple pop it in job or if it\'s already been removed are there other bits I will need?

I wish I was near someone who knew what they were doing, it\'s so hard working on it when you don\'t have a clue lol.

I will try my best to get it running as I have lots of patience for these little beauties :-)

a replacement complete rats nest will drop straight on and the wiring to plug in the solenoids on it should still be on the engine loom.... if your rats nest has been taken off by someone who doesn\'t know what they are doing, your car will run like a dog!
Lots of info and advice in the 1st gen threads here...

I guess the one you have should go straight in then :-) I hope that it fixes the problem because it really doesn\'t like being warm haha

Ian65

the Nikki carb and the rats nest work hand in hand to provide the correct mixture whilst controlling the emissions. If any part of the setup is not working or is missing, you\'ll have starting / running problems that are extremely difficult to diagnose and fix.
By far the easiest way to fix things is to swap in a complete setup that you know to be good. When working, it is a very reliable setup..... most problems arise from the car not running for years and the carb getting clogged with solidifying fuel or from people messing about with them......

Cheers mate.

Ill definitely give it a go :-) I think that the air con pump has also been removed,  plus there are a couple of pipes blocked off under the air filter box thing (real technical i know). I will let you know how I get on if it\'s still ok to buy your carb with the rats nest? ill message you my details and get your payment info :-)

I just wish I knew what the person before me had done to it and what he had removed. It would make life so much easier haha

It\'s normal to have the blanking-off thingies on any FB nowadays. 90% of them, including mine, have had the exhaust changed out for a simpler system and the air pump removed. Don\'t worry about that.

It\'s not an air con pump by the way; the FB never had air con - even though there\'s a dash knob for it - there\'s nothing connected to the knob.
Rather what\'s been removed is an air pump for blowing fresh air into a heavy reactor vessel on the exhaust - that has gone from the 90% of FB\'s with simpler exhaust as well.

You can trust Ian65 absolutely, he\'s probably the most technically clued up and FB oriented person I Know. I\'m just the street running Grandad of the FB scene.

He\'s right as well that the Nikkis are a bit of a buggex to set up if they\'ve been seriously bodged.
