Long before i got into the Jap car scene and everything FD i was a big fan of the early VW\'s. I used to own a \'69 karmann cabrio bug which was great in the summer with the roof down. Always brought a smile to my face.
I\'ve never given up on the aircooled scene and still get Volksworld magazine each month to see whats going on.
So at the weekend i made my annual pilgramage to Sandown Park race course in Esher for the Volksword show.
To give you an idea how big this show is it took us over an hour of queuing to get in and park up. But luckily it was a lovely day and the sun was shining
So on with the car...

First up out in the car park was this lovely Porsche 912. Ok its not a VW but it has the same(ish) engine)

The bus boys on show outside the entrance were really cool. I was to over excited to get the name of the club but judging by the state of some of them they looked like they\'d had a heavy night :p

Hannah loved the Rat look ones

I prefer the shiney ones myself, especailly when they have such cool accessories as the coca cola cool box

After getting in the first attraction was this little number. Dolly Mixture has been arouund for years in various colours and had had a recent resoration

Outside by the Parade ring was a selection of early buses and other fun bits.
Old skool sign writing was very cool

Here\'s how the Rat look should really look

£30k is what you\'d have to pay for an early bus nowadays

One for the girls

Round the other side were a few early Bay window buses and a selection of custom bugs

Here\'s what really low should look like lil Ed :D

With old VW\'s also comes Old Skool scooters and retro bike (Choppers, BMX\'s etc). Did these kids get the idea I was trying to take a good picture, did the fduk!

Inside the main hall the main attraction of the show was this prototype Porsche Type 64

Feel free to read and learn all about it :p

Immaculate Samba bus (i want one but dont have a spare £50k+ for one)

Porsche Powered Type 3 variant

Anyone else remember the Wild Willy Tamiya RC jeep? well here\'s the real thing

Here is one of the orginal Herbie car used in the Film \'The Love Bug\'. It was the H2 car used for the race scenes so had loads of porche parts to power it up

Read and learn again

Lovely paint on this oval rag top

Type 34. Similar to the Karmann ghia but much rarer.

The Ghia. This car was built by a guy called Bernard Newbury to show off his custom skills and interior work. When it was unvailed back in the early 90s it took the VW world to a different league and quailty and attention to detail and won many awards and best of show at this show.
Some bits have changed over the years but it still is an amazing machine

Concept Racing\'s racing pick up. Carbon fibre and custoom tricks galor on this truck

Slammed Jeans machine

This was for sale. If you have to ask the price you can\'t afford it

Crazy rod bug next to the Porsche

Not many cars can get away with a gatling gun exhaust but i think this one can

Outside again but this time on the grandstand.
I think Dave (sicknote) would like this buggy

The Type 181 club (even they have one)

Couple of slammed Ghia\'s (one of my top 3 dream cars EVER!)

Type 3 Detectives. Showing of their Variant (square back) Notch and fast back cars

How\'s this for a bit of fun.

This car won best of show here and at Bug Jam about 4 or 5 years ago. So so tidy

Very nice race spec Ghia

A rare 412

In the downstair smaller hall there was more top notch buses and bugs

The insane Race Shack drag racing Trekker

How my old bug could of looked if i\'d restored it up

The for sale section in the car park had a varied selection of motors on offer if you had the cash

£25k for this 11 window bus

£7k got you this Commer van

He\'s one for you American car lovers a Chevy Imparla. The car wasn\'t for sale but the guys had loads of stuff around it that was

I was tempted with this to make it my next project but the boss (Hannah) said not today ha ha. To be fair it wasn\'t the right year model i\'d like.

Totally orginal split window beetle. Yours for £25k!!

A bit cheaper was this early polo. Only £1600

Around the car park were just loads of lovely cars that anywhere else would be amazing in there own right.

Another Type 34

Just stopped for a picnic

Stunning delux van

This was a cover car on the magazine a while back but now just gets to park in the car park such is the pace the scene mores on.

Last but by no means least we have a stripped out race oval bug. Very nice.

Great day had and gets me thinking again of getting another old skool aircooled VeeDub. Think it would have to be a Ghia first, and then a Type 3 Variant and if i ever win the lottery, a nice Samba bus. Dream on!!

i LOVE old school VWs..! Have a 67 bug roadster myself, leather bucket seats, puma front end, lowered all over, yellow little thing :D

re japi

Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.

I used to love my VW\'s too, had a couple of Beetles and 2 bay window campers, wish i had kept those 2 the amount they go for nowadays. Probably the most horrible cars or bus i have ever driven though :) an wouldnt want one for love nor money, but would love a Ghia one day, maybe even a notchback.

Great pics, i remember my dad restoring a beetle when i was a kid. Always found them cool, always liked the older bud scene  :)
