Tyre Sizes

Hey peeps!
 
What tyre sizes have you got on your 17" alloy wheels (FD3S) Do you have to have wider tyres at the back than the front?

255/40y17 on the rear and 235/45y17 on the front

It depends what width your wheel is if you have aftermarket wheels.

Hey Steve they are 17x8.5 offset 42 and 17x9.5 offset 42 114.3 5h.

Any ideas what tyres would be suitable for these guys?

For the rear the optimum sizes are 255 or 265 with 275 being the max to fit to a 9.5 inch wide rim. I\'d probably go with the 255, 275 would look balloon like.

I think as above should suit them fine.

Hi matt

I would strongly recommend two things.

1. Don\'t run a 40 profile on 17\'s
2. Don\'t run a larger profile on the front than the back.

40 profile on a 17 is far too small imo. If you\'re lowing the car and want a reasonably small arch gap you\'ll be running silly low. Heres a pic of my old car on a 40 profile on 17\'s


The arch gap was a lot bigger than i would have liked and the car was silly low (doesn\'t look too low in that picture but it was pretty ridiculous)

A larger profile on the front than the back will just look silly. Ideally to make an fd look nice you want either the same profile front and back or a larger profile at the back.

As for tyre widths thats completely down to you. I ran 195\'s up front on a 9J and 225\'s on the rear on a 10J on a 430ish bhp rx7. car tended to skip through 1st a bit but would grip through 2nd etc. TBH i was going more for the look of stretched tyres than performance but they were absolutely fine on the road.

And finally, you if you\'re correct about those ET\'s you\'re going to need 35+mm spacers imo

ok well now im faced with a dillema which tyres do i choose for these alloys? Pretty sure on the offset but i have some 25mm spacers which may do the job..

The height of the tyre wall is determined on a % of the width. So in Matts case 45% of 235 = 10.57cm

Now if he ran 45 profile on the 255 that would be - 45% of 255 = 11.47cm
If he runs a 40 profile on the 255 that would make the tyre wall = 10.20cm

So in comparison..

Same profile size in this example 45

235/45 = 10.57cm
255/45 = 11.47cm

Giving us a total of 9mm difference in height.

Different size..

235/45 = 10.57
255/40 = 10.20

Gives us a total of 3.7mm difference in height.

He would be better off going for the difference in profile because of the difference in widths.

If you want the side wall to be pretty much the same then yeah, my stock rims have different profiles here, 45 front 40 rear..



But as suggested you can have a bigger one up back so if you did run 40 on the 255 that\'d be a 10.2cm height and the fronts a 9.4cm height 8mm difference.

If you went 45 front and 40 rear then the profiles would be pretty much identical bar 3mm.

Down to persona l preference i suppose.
