Hey Guys i need some help getting to the bottom of something. Any information i can get will be a great help.

Ok here goes......

I moved my rex about a month ago and it seemed to be working fine. I did do a stupid thing. I moved it 10 feet and turned it off. Ive learned about flooding the hard way. Went to start it a few days ago and it wouldnt start. So i assumed that the car was flooded.

Now heres a few things ive tried to try and cure the problem. Ive tried starting it with my foot to the floor to deflood it......Didnt work. Ive had the spark plugs out and cranked it with plugs out to kick any petrol out of the engine. Used Auto transmission oil and put a little bit in the holes to lubricate the apex seals. Put spark plugs back in and tried to crank. Still not worked.

Im not sure where to start next. Is there anything else i should be checking or looking for. The car will turn over however will not start. Ive almost had it started but it just splutters and dies again.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

plugs can be killed on these if left in fuel,id bite the bullet and start with 4 new plugs
take out the big yellow egi relay and crank with plugs out and foot to the floor for 10 seconds 5 or 6 times,or untill you feel its freeing up,then heat the plugs and put them in hot,put the relay back in then turn with no throttle at all.this should sort it,though on some you may have to turn it for ages without plugs to build compression/free seals.you could clean and try with old plugs but it will make life harder for you

Have you pulled the EGI fuse and cranked it with your foot to the floor - just in case the engine is still firing the injectors when cranking.

Mikey22

Yeah ive tried cranking with plugs out and egi fuse and relay out to make sure no fuel is being put into the engine.

I think the thing thats letting it down now is the spark plugs. They seem to be letting the whole thing down now. clogged with carbon etc.

I did try it just for the sake of it. I cranked 6 times for 10 seconds with plugs out. (with foot to the floor) then placed old sparks back in and connected all up. She did fire up but i must have gotten excited as i let go of the key and she died instantly :(

I was so close lol. Pick up new sparkies tomorrow so hope for good news then :)

Just make sure that the HT leads are on the right way round as well!

Mikey22

If im honest ive only pulled the 2 spark plugs out just to make sure i dont mix the HT leads up. Will this make any difference? Just having the two out i mean.

Or will i need to take all four out?

all four mate and just change them it will make your life and future starting much nicer

Ok now im starting to get annoyed slightly.

Heres the update..... I bit the bullet and went and got 4 new spark plugs today from unipart. Got home and decided right sod it ill fit them now.

So i took all four spark plugs out and the EGI relay. Cranked the engine 5-6 times then stopped. To help the car out i also had the car hooked up to a running car next to it. The car seemed to have a good strong crank and was going at quite some rate. So i thought that the engine was free enough to try putting the new plugs in.

So applied a little anti lock to the threads and fitted the spark plugs. Then connected the HT leads up. Replaced the EGI relay and got ready to brace myself for some good news. Unfortunately this never happened as the car cranks well but just refuses to fire up. It fired for a few seconds but died immediately.

Ive tried this technique 3 times today. Is this something i just have to persist with? I just dont know what else it could be.....

Any help would be great.....Thanks

P.S. The only thing that worries me is that the bottom spark plugs dont seem to sit in up to the hilt like the top ones. Will this effect the ignition?

Bottom plugs will look differnt to tops, as the top shroud on the housing sticks out more,

check you have leads on correctly.

Tow start as you have prob fould your new plugs with atf.

the blue ones are the top leads

cyman

first thing i would do is check for a spark. put one of the plugs in one of the leads and rest it against the engine and crank it over and make sure its sparking ok. if it is then i would try a tow start if theres no spark then check fuses, leads etc

Mikey22

Well guys thanks for all your help, just got one thing to say now...

SHES ALIVE!!!! lol

No idea that a car spluttering to life could sound so good :)

Thanks again
