Im hopping to have my engine rebuilt and a power fc full stainless exhaust (de-cat).

i know that you should only use 99 oct in a fd but i have used others when im only going round town because tesco and shell is so far away from where i live.

i spoke to pip and carl they can map the car for me on both 95 or 99 oct but what is the general oct that people use and what can be the up and down side of these different oct fuels?

Grant Monkhouse

Most people run vpower as that\'s what most builders recommend to use. Sometimes I have had to put other fuel in because there isn\'t a convenient shell garage around. I just put enough in so that I can fill it up soon with vpower. And I don\'t give the car stick if I have rubbish fuel in.

so is it safe to say that i should get the new ecu mapped to 99? what is better v-power or tesco 99 been googleing but its seem to be lots of mixed ideas

You can map to 98/99 and use the 95 stuff but dont give it stick because the car will only be expecting the better fuel.

You could just map to the 95 fuel and then you will always have the right stuff in the tank.  You will have a little less power and the tuner may choose to decrease the rev limit.  For example when I was mapped to 99 ron my limit was 8,100 rpm and now im on 95 ron my limit is 7,800rpm.  When I got mapped to the 95 fuel I did so when I put a new rebuilt engine in - I had 1bhp more @ same boost so I cant comment on what the performance loss would be normally.

Vpower seems to be the best. Prety consistent in this country but if you leave it stood for a couple of months best to top it up with fresh fuel. Run it down to empty and fill it back up again. The cost of one tank is far cheaper than a rebuild

I\'ve read that Tesco 99 has a lot more ethanol added to it and as such is subject to quicker degradation of RON and a more variable RON. Basically, not as high quality as VPower!

wolfie1

i read that about tesco fuel too

I\'ve never managed to have Tesco fuel in my FD long enough to worry about degradation! :Giggle

Heh, true, but how long has it been sitting in the tank below the forecourt before you fill up?

gonzoninja

True.

My personal feeling is to map for the lowest common denomintor, I will always fill up with super unleaded, so mine\'s mapped on BP 97 Ron fuel.

While I have used 99 Ron Tesco stuff it is from fairly busy forecourt (Tesco\'s in Broadbridge Heath), tons of imprezas and evos fill up there so I think the fuel is pretty fresh. I\'m sure someone will tell me that\'s incorrect.
