Failed MOT on monday due to emmisions, spoke to Geff and also Clive for ideas on how to get it to pass. :(
Geff suggested getting him to test at a below 2500rpm so that air pump was running, or it definately wouldn\'t pass.  Clive suggested taking it to be tested without the airfilter in the box, because I said it was quite dirty.
Did both. Took panel filter out- it was covered in oil, black! :rolleyes:

Comparing failed emmisions output sheet with last years, CO and HC limits were the same, but on last years the lambda had to be between 0.97 and 1.6, whereas this time it was 0.97-1.03. Showed tester this and he was like, \'I\'ve never seen anything be tested at a value that high before, it must be wrong\'.

Turns out that he had originally tested it as a standard cat test, because the chassis number FD3S-xxxxxxx was not found on his system, the only one listed for an RX-7 was FD13B2.  Ring any bells?! I think it was OJ that was on about this a little while ago.

I got him to try it on that FD13B2 setting and.. voila! 0.97-1.6 lambda, come on!! The rev range was also different, 2340-2650 instead of 2500-3000. He still had to do it slightly below that to make the lambda stay just under 1.6, but then the rev sensor wouldn\'t fit on my fat magnecor leads anyway, so there is no rev reading shown on the printout.;):cheers

Anyway, just thought it might be of interest to anyone with an import that\'s got an MOT due. Is it just me thats had all this effort, or have people been getting theirs tested as UK cars all this time? Is anything being done to get the VI to recognise FD3S chassis numbers?:confused:

G\'Day Rich!

Good stuff mate, thanks for posting this up.

Not sure about the emissions stuff - hopefully someone else will pick this up.
Thanks,

clive

Hi Rich

Real pleased you got sorted , see you Sunday.

Along similar lines, I posted the following elsewhere on the board but it didn\'t raise any comment.:

QuoteMOTs - 1st Gen - Emissions - a query
Colin James, in "Rotary Ravings" - the news sheet of //www.rx-7club.org mentions that in the MOT:

"the Series 1 is exempt from emissions tests."

I have enquired on the forum there but have no replies to date, so......please does anyone have \'chapter and verse\' for this so that I can refer my Motty Man to the right page in his Merry Motty Manual?
They are a disbelieving lot round here.
Thanks folks,
Frank

as this emissions business seems to be problematic, can anyone say if the above quote is even true and if so what is the number (or whatever) under which MOTs are done for early Series 1 SA22C or Series 1 FB types, please.
Thanks
Frank

Hi Frank  /  Rich ,

Next week l will talk to a D.O.T. man that l know  ( these day\'s he does most of his work  on SVA\'s) and a "normal" MOT man l have know for years to see what they have to say about the respective years and models of RX-7\'s and emissions.

From memory the EGI is also exempt, and l think something changes when the vehicle is 10 years old.

Thanks Clive, that would be very useful and I\'ll be interested to hear what he says.

Since I posted the above I put the lot into a search engine and came upwith a useful page at:
http://www.bobmackay.co.uk/p_emissions.html
and another at
http://www.babmackay.co.uk/emission.html#passcars

One quote, which seems to contradict what Colin James says, mentions that:

QuoteEmissions testing for petrol engines appears complex but once the date of first use and the vehicle type has been established then it\'s really quite simple.

Passenger cars:

First used before 1/8/1975 - Visual test only. Failure for excess idle speed, dense blue or black smoke for 5 seconds at idle or during acceleration  up to 2500rpm or half engine max speed whichever lowest.
First used between 1/8/75 and 31/7/86 - meter test CO <=4.5%, HC<=1200ppm.

First used between 1/8/86 and 31/7/92 - meter test CO<=3.5%, HC<=1200ppm.
First used between 1/8/92 and 31/7/94 - advanced emission test (CAT) if its running on petrol when presented, to the vehicle specific limits usually around CO<=0.3%, HC<=200ppm and Lambda 0.97 - 1.03.  Remember from 1st August 2001 a basic emission test will be carried out initially.

Note that the tests vehicles for first registered on or after 1/8/92 require expensive exhaust gas analyser equipment which is usually only available to the trade. However, there is DIY equipment available which is relatively inexpensive to enable emissions tests on vehicles prior to that date.

Certainly it seems a lot easier on we \'oldies\' - but a requirement is in place just the same, it seems

I\'ll ask my dad tonight ... he works for the VI inspecting MOT stations

If I remember correctly the 1st gen is just about exempt from the emmissions testing or the limits are so high that it doesn\'t really matter

Mike

Hmm. Interesting stuff. Always wondered what the limits were. My \'89 NA EGI FC passed first time a few months ago and the readings were 0.16% for CO and 194 for H/C which looks good.:)

Martin.

From THE maunal  (The MOT inspection Manual june 2002 issue)

Wankel rotary engine vehicles first used before 1 August 1987, Kit cars, and ameuteur built vehicles for emissions purposes only, are to be considered as vehicles first used before 1 August 1975

Emissions testing

Vehicles 1st used Before 1st August 1975 - Visual test only :cool

1 August \'75 - 31 July \'86   - CO <= 4.5%   HC <=1200ppm

1 August \'86 - 31 July \'92 - CO <=3.5% HC <=1200ppm

LPG - CO <=3.5% HC <=1200ppm

CNG - CO <=3.5%

The visual test is very vauge as is basically a check for excessive blue or black smoke at idle or during acceleration that may obscure the vision of other road users (!!)

Mike

MikeLMR

^^^ the above information is only for vehicles not fitted with a catalytic converter

Phranque

OK Mike - but that begs the question "what applies in the case of vehicles with a cat conv?2. Are the tests more stringent for the likes of mine with a cat conv?

It was a good day, by the way, but heck I\'m tired!

Nite

zzzzzzzz   zzzzz zzzzz z

pre 31 July 92 you don\'t need a cat so its still a visual only test

Glad you had a good day at brooklands ... looked like the weather was good

Mike. According to your own list, all post 75  cars need more than a visual test...

I can find you the page number if you\'d like to quote it too your MOT man

mmilner

Ahah. Missed your 2nd para.  I still don\'t understand why they quote emissions values (1 August \'75 - 31 July \'86 - CO <= 4.5% HC <=1200ppm) when any vehicle used before 1/8/87 doesn\'t need \'em. :confused:

Still, doesn\'t affect me as mine\'s an \'89...
