I have an issue with I believe my ignition barrell rather than the key itself as the previous owner only recently brought new keys.

My problem is only every now and then but today happened a lot and I nearly got stranded.

The key goes into the ignition cleanly and easily. BUT sometimes I just cant turn it even to the first position. Its almost as if steering lock is on. But I wiggle the steering wheel and still it proves very difficult to turn.

I believe I need a new ignition barrell.

So I thought would seek advice to ask:-

1) How much is a new ignition barrell and where is the best place to get one from?

2) How difficult are they to fit, is it a job I could do myself?

3) I assume I will now have to have a different key for the new ignition to the one I have for the doors?

Need to get this sorted asap as dont wanna get stranded anywhere lol.

There is a number on the drivers door lock, get the number and have a new key cut as the last one may not have been cut properly, worth a try anyway.

I am pretty sure it is ignition barrel as have tried two keys

philiwily

But they may be copy\'s of a worn key.
Do the keys you have look new or old?

carlbrainiac

One is the master key I think. And it has the numbers on it. Doesn\'t look like its hardly been used

Can anyone suggest where i can get an ignition barrel?

Think have seen one on eBay recently dude. Worth having a check on there for people breaking rex\'s. Think Dragon Performance may even be selling one!

Sorry its with steering column too. Not sure if its a bit pricy too. If you did get it you could use it and keep the keys you have for opening the door and a seperate key for ignition. i did this with one of my Vws long ago and didnt cause much of an issue.

Yeah I had seen that one. Tempting. Especially as lacey mentioned if its anything like the fc then the bolts that hold the barrel to the column aren\'t your average bolts and can be quite tricky and so easier to do whole column but that sounds like a lot of work :S Is there anyone here who has done this job and can advise me?

carlbrainiac

Went for that one on eBay. New ones are like £230+ Just hope it fits ok as its from a 2000 model year. Mine is 1992. But spoke to the guy at dragon performance who seemed to know his stuff and he said it will fit
