CHC (RIP)

Quote from: CHC;755903I gave up on \'boring cars\' many years ago so my normal consumption for 20+ years would have been between 18 - 24mpg so returning to the fuel economy of the rx7 :rollinis nothing out of the ordinary to me. If you have to keep asking how much it costs to run then it\'s time to sell it.
Whereas I am very pleased and proud to have chosen to drive rx7\'s again so it costs \'what it costs\' and stuff the economists I say - just enjoy the power, the ride and thrill of these special sports cars!

Having just re-read this posting I\'d just like to clarify and explain my statement "stuff the economists".  Here I am refering simply to economists and politicians and NOT anybody on this forum or whomever choses to own or drive rotary powered vehicles.  We (that is owners/drivers of high powered engines and \'gas guzzlers\') are constantly being vistimised by the beaurocrats and green peace type persons and the like for enjoying these modes of transport.
So how does the \'system\' tackle this issue? - put taxation up and fuel prices, just anything to try and force us to take such transportation off the roads.  Rather than victimising the motorists perhaps the easiest and fairest way would be to take the \'Road Fund License\' away altogether and impose an extra levy on the fuel (say 5p per litre) to contribute to road maintenance - at least this way all motorists would be encapsulated and pay a proportional amount towards the use of the roads.  If you don\'t use you transport often - you pay less but obviously the more you use them the more we should cough up - surely this is a better policy than at present.

Quote from: CHC;755911Ditto John - I\'m the same, believe me. Gone are the days when I had a company car doing loadsamiles and in the latter 5 years my mileage has dropped considerably to something like 10-12K and yes lets be honest the ever increasing cost of fuel has made me think twice about some journeys but not enough to make me change over to a bog standard car which does 40 - 60mpg (although sometimes it would be nice). My point was if we buy a rx7 (or any rotary powered car come to that) we have to expect lowish economy - me, if JAZ & or Golide does 20+ I\'ll be jumping for joy.

I can offer you some encouragement. When she was newer Miss January would normally do mid twenties, less round town and more on a cruise of course. It is only recently that consumption has gone south, which is why I am thinking about a carb rebuild. Another suggestion was to look at the ignition system, ie, new coils, leads, plugs. I suppose I should also check the compression, but having seen discussions of this elsewhere it  sounds difficult to do properly / meaningfully.

Yeah - I think Tim as saying that he had his checked once, cost £25 (if my memory is correct) but that was quite some time ago.  I dare say it would probably be in the region of £150 now.
I think you are on the correct wavelength with the electrical side too as through the years cables/leads, plugs, rotor arms & dizzy caps all succumb to long term deterioration so changing them can only improve the efficiency for burning fuel.  This just has to be the easier approach and change the \'lead boots\' for slippers rather than a full carb re-build 1st.

That was the first thing I did when I first got the car. Although I\'ve been half looking at going EFI to get rid of the dizzy and coils.

I must admit this is something I haven\'t got around to doing on JAZ but am collecting the necessary replacement parts for Goldie in preparation before she is roadworthy. The engine wasn\'t running when I bought Golide but I was told it did work so I\'ll replace what I can to give it the best possible chance to fire up when ready.

I\'m hoping 2 wheels will be my petrol saviour!

Getting a motorbike that\'ll do 60mpg is easy enough and can still be much more fun than a car that does 60mpg :P

If I used the bike 50% of the time and the <20 mpg rx7 the other 50% then it should average out close to 40mpg haha.

A fair compromise I\'d say - bike in the summer, Rexanne spring & autumn and stay in during the winter months!  But does that mean you\'ll spend nearly 8 months of the year inside.... hehehe :rollin
