Lol can\'t remember now, my youth was a long time ago now :(. I remember having a big car chassis set that had a working engine and everything on it (not working as in you filledit up with petrol, working as in you could see the bits whizzing about inside). That was mega expensive and had an insturction book like a phone directory, now sadly missing. I had a few smaller sets but cant remember what, all the instructions are long gone and its all jumbled up it a massive box. It all belongs to Mr C now but he loves people to help him with it, I\'m sure he\'d be more than happy if you want to come round and play with it :rollin

EPIC :)

I had (have) that set too ... Best. LEGO. Ever.

Having engineers as parents, Lego (& Mecano) was a popular toy in our household - no arguments from me there.

My boy is just starting with Technic stuff now... he loves it :) Time to call my parents, and get them to find all my old Lego sets!

BTW, for all of you with Lego (of all kinds), that is missing instructions, or just in need of a nostalgia blast, go and check out: www.peeron.com pictures of sets, inventories of bricks, and most importantly scans of many of the instructions booklets!

Nik, you will be requiring this page:

I had that set twice when i was a kid. Loved it and have been tempted into buying it again but to get a 100% complete one off ebay can cost up to £60-70 now a days

Probably cheaper than it was to buy it new, IIRC they were like 30-40 quid back in sorta 1982 or whatever, so that must be the equivalent of at least 60 quid today! Dan, those links don\'t seem to work, just freeze up. Maybe I\'ll try again later whent he internet\'s less popular :Giggle

Glad I\'m not the only one with a dark Lego past hahaha. Meccano was the ...., too, I\'ve got a big boxful of that for Mr C to inherit once he\'s a bit older as well :yes

Yep - the links are slow... just have a little patience, the server is probably being hammered to death by the MRC-Secret-Lego-Lovers-Society :)

Likewise Meccano is "in reserve" - small fiddly bits, although my boy has coped extremely well with the Technic 8048 Buggy, which has quite a few intricate pieces. It even has a "working" version of one of those odd "piston engines"... they\'ll never catch on - imagine turning lateral motion into rotational motion, surely that can\'t be mechanically efficient ;)

Yeah, speaking of inefficient, you know I never twigged when I was little but that Car Chassis set is cleary based on Dr Ferdinand\'s best Beetle, what with that boxer engine hanging outside the wheelbase like that :rollin Ridiculous, it\'ll never catch on :Nono!

I shall persist with the links though I\'m not sure if enough of the components survive to build the entire thing again. Hmmmm, be fun trying though ;)

I won my first Lego Technic kit in a drawing competition- it was the 6wd snow truck thing with quad steer and complete with lanky Technic legomen skiers. Then I think I had the big red car with pop up headlights and moving engine bits, followed by smaller ones I can\'t recall and my last couple were the JCB with working pneumatics and black log truck with on board compressor. Kept my dad busy for yonks!

Thats all been handed down to my eldest now but that crane he got is awesome.

Lego technic was THE best toy ever!

I remember always wanting the pneumatic sets, but could never afford them! I had a technics digger and helicopter that were my favourites :) Engines, where you could see the pistons moving seemed like pure magic!

I must have been a very geeky child as I remember spending what felt like years (read a couple of days) trying to work out how to build a gearbox. I did manage a 3 speed working box, which I connected upto the movIng pistons. I was so proud of my self, haha.
1984 Rx7: Gold. Edging towards roadworthyness!

Lego ????
Am I showing my age if I mention Meccano ??? :Laugh All those little nuts and bolts.............probably where my interest in \'fixing stuff\' began !!

Well done on so many posts Nik, I\'ve only read a fraction of them being a newbie.:god

I\'ve just sold a technic set on ebay as it wasn\'t in very good condition and incomplete. It was set 853.
It was the first technic chassis set (the one before the big black bettle type one... 8860 which i\'d love so much to have again)
I still have set 8448 which i think was the last great car they did.
Speaking of toys we had as kids, i\'m seriously considering getting myself a Tamiya rc car, just to have something to build up and play around with. Not to bothered about racing it about, just like the building bit :D I used to have a Monster Bettle (sorry Nik.. another bettle :p), Terra Scorcher, Impreza (hangs head in shame) and the huge Clod Buster. I always dreamed of having the top of the line buggy called the Avante and as luck would have it Tamiya are going to re release it again just how it was (with a couple of small improvements) this coming february. Me thinks i might just have to get one :D

Y\'see, I\'m with Al, though not quite so old lol! I had Meccano and that was where my love of engineering came from. When I was little Lego was the old skool big brick stuff, I was sorta too old to get much benefit from the Technic stuff cos it only just started really taking off as I was getting too old to play with it (or to admit playing with it to my peers lol). The new Meccano is great, you get allen-headed bolts as well as the scredriver and old square spanner jobbies which makes it a bit easier for little clumsy fingers. Mr C has a new tiny Meccano helicopter we bought him :). Never had a remote control car, though always wanted one. I used to like making military model kits especially tanks, and cars and bikes too. I just like the little details. Still do on life-size toys like RX-7s too :o
