Compression test is not the only critical thing to look out for! Get to see the car from cold and make sure you do a champagne test, this will let you know if the water seals may be on the way out. After a decent test drive hang around to see if the engine throws it\'s coolant out, another classic sign that she\'ll need a rebuild.
I\'ve got a lovely engine on the shelf, starts perfectly in any situation, goes like stink but after she\'s left standing after a blast you\'ll return to a warm pool of water...........this engine still has excellent compression so beware  :2Confused

If the car is cold mate you dont need the coolant and pop bottle just start it idling with the coolant cap off and wait. A couple of individual bubbles is fine but lots of constant little bubbles (hence champagne) is a bad sign.

Also if you are only gonna be doing 2 miles each day to your dads make sure you take a much longer way there as it takes around 10 miles to warm the car up. Dont leave it idling on your drive it just annoys your neighbours and takes forever to get any heat through. Also remember to try and get it up the revs to redline once on each journey.

Are you looking for a standard car/lightly modified/single turbo/crazy 500+ monster ?

a standard car with any sort of exhaust system on will most certainly annoy your neighbour then, lol. Some big ports and a Nurspec and she will be doing backflips lol

im not bothers what i get i just want a rex will probz turn my hand at tuning as i always do but duno haw far il take it

neil_jdmr

If you are after something reliable then as close to standard as possible or a small single with very thorough history and mapping from a known rotary tuner is probably best.

They are surprisingly quick as standard due to being so light for a turbo-rwd and with very minor mods can embarass major marques  911 c4s is my best to date. Single turbo cars are supercar munching performance although i can imagine they are a handful in anyhing other than bone dry tarmac.
