Not a G8 article by MSN very brief, they state it went like stink, sadly most examples are no more due to corrossion.

In the article they mention supercharged versions, mazda only did a turbo version,did\'nt they?

didnt realise there were 50 different cars in the 70\'s
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

in the era of such stylish technological wonders as the maxi, allegro and marina, it must be impossible for the RX7 to fail to make the top 50.

You should have gone to specsavers mate ;)

"It looked great and went like stink, especially once a turbocharger had been strapped onto the ultra-smooth Wankel engine. But corrosion has claimed most examples by now, sadly."

no mention of a supercharger, just the turbo :D

It\'s alright Stu - we knew what you meant.

It looks as though BMW cornered the market in the 70\'s for new models too.

I often wondered which came 1st - the RX7 or the Porsche 924.  So just googled it, the Porsche was introduced in 1976 but I noticed there was no sign of it in the 70\'s top 50 cars which indicates the RX7 was/is a better car as I suspected.

back in the 80\'s, I did a straight swap on a pub cark park for my S3 A reg RX7 for a W reg Porsche 924.
Although the Porsche was 3 years older, they were both valued at the time at £5500 as the Porsches retained their value better.

Both were in comparable condition with full main dealer history so the deal was done.

I swapped this...

for this....

Having driven RX7\'s everyday for the previous 2 years and then stepping directly into the Porsche I was able to easily compare the 2.
I\'d been after a nice 924 for a while and really looked forward to owning one but I was disappointed right from the off.
After the smoothness of the Mazda, the rough 4 cylinder engine in the 924 seemed unrefined and pretty gutless.
The 924 was a lighter car but felt heavier than the nimble RX7 and the clunky gearchange due to the transaxle didn\'t help.
My mate had an identical white S3 RX7 to the one I\'d swapped and the Porsche was nowhere near as fast as his Mazda, although he was running a more or less straight through Janspeed system on it.

The only good thing about the Porsche was that it was a bit of a f**nymagnet which for a single 24 year old bloke was a useful asset to have.
Having said that, I\'ve always regretted doing that deal. The RX7 was a much better car to own and drive than the Porsche.

You must have done the deal on your way out of the pub!

The only good Porsches are air-cooled :D

to be fair, the 944 was a great car and the 928 was a beast as well but the 924 lux that I swapped the RX7 for was a very average car.
It was the entry level Porsche and wasn\'t really worthy of the badge. It was originally conceived as a VW which is how it ended up with the crap Audi engine in it plus plenty of other bits out of the VAG parts bin.
Pity VW didn\'t keep it.

I never realised the 924 was actually as bad as that.  I was twenty when they introduced this as a production car and it was drooled over by my mates and work colleagues. I\'d bought our 1st house so no thought was given towards buying a car then but hell it sure was a pretty looking one.  By the time we were in a position to purchase a sports car as a 2nd vehicle, we\'d had 4 other Mazdas (2 x 323\'s, an 818 & a 626 SDX) so I\'d set my sights higher to the RX7 and having read your comments simply confirms I made the right choice then and never looked back.

Thats funny Cliff, my first Mazda was a \'72 1800 Est, I bought that off my Dad, he always got different cars to other people, he even bought a Skoda new in \'65 that fell apart by \'67. The next was a Montrose Coupe in \'79 followed by the \'81 RX7, then a \'81 626 SDX Coupe in 83 (RX sold for deposit on house)then a \'84 RX7 series 3, in 86 followed by a 87 XJS in \'88, but still missed my RX7 so in \'89 I got the one I still have today, using the Jag as my main car while the RX7 was nice and warm in the garage.
