Hi, If possible if any 1 has any idea\'s or has had the same and may know my RX7\'s problem.

Had the car 3 weeks, Being busy getting little bits sorted on it before I decide whether or not to keep it.

Car was running spot on, Except for an alternator fault which was replaced, I then fitted an ARC induction kit and it continued to run spot on.

Last Sunday I was dropping the car off for some paint and as I accelerated hard up a hill the car just dropped off the revs like I had hit the brakes and then carried on going as normal, Happened for a split second, I imagine the Boost was at full.

Then this week I took the car to WGT for a compression test which came back good. No problems on the way or the way back. Today I have been to work in it and when I left I went to see a relative, The road out there is a fast 1 and a couple of times I gave it a bit of stick. A few times to say the least the at full boost as I accelerated the same happened. The engine feels as though it has died and then suddenly comes back to life. Pip said it my be due to the cold weather that the turbo is over boosting.

But as I left my relatives I started the car and it went off, I started her again and it out right refused to start, I left it a few seconds (20) and tried again, Still struggling to start so I left it a good minute. Eventually it started and was trying to cut out again so I gave her a few revs to clear her out. Then she was fine.  But again on my way home the same happened it kept cutting out under hard acceleration.

It doesn\'t seem to matter on rev amount and it happens most in 1st and 2nd gear, It will happily rev to 8500 rpm in neutral or with the clutch down. \\I have seen it do it while at 5500 rpm and 7500 rpm and it just starts to spit and splutter. Like it\'s not getting enough of something or the spark plugs aren\'t working. I can\'t imagine the turbo is broke and it only seems do it when it\'s cold.

Sorry for the long story but I really need help, I have wanted a RX7 for years and love the car I just always seem to have bad luck. (last car FTO with 12k of mods, Left at nurburgring after power steering belt snapped and shredded my engine, Did not owe me more than £3k but I was still heart broken)

Ty for any help. :god

what ecu? sounds like it could be boost cut...

Hi mate I\'m no expert, but when was it last serviced, these cars don\'t like running on old plugs n oil, plus it cutting out at higher revs could strongly be down to the fuel filter being clogged, mine wouldn\'t run right at high revs but was fine at lower rpm and that was down to the fuel filter messing e everything up.

Rage

Hi, Standard ECU, Standard engine. Fuel filter I must say I was wondering that. I bought oil and a filter but haven\'t had chance yet. I have a new pump to put on so I\'ll give it a swap over tomorrow if I get a chance.

Also it\'s running quite rich.

marco

if it is a standard ecu it is probably boost cut- the new intercooler is possibly doing its job too well?! what other modifications does it have? exhaust etc? its probably time to start thinking of an apexi (other ecus are available...)

Rage -  get it fully services and then remapped to an acceptable boost limit, that should solve your issues.

Hi, I would say when you went to Pip at WGT, what was the reason that you didn\'t do full check on the car??compression test is good thing to do...but a bit of engine checking by Pip would have solved all the problems...If your car\'s compression is good, personally i would trailer the car to pip and let him do all the checking on the engine....I would also suggest-don\'t drive the car and get it fully checked...would save you a lot of money...

+1 for boost cut,

Standard ecu is gash, save for a pfc and pop back to pips

I don\'t get this...
You said you went to Pip \'with the car\' and he told you exactly what he believes it is (which does sound spot on), but you come on here asking non-experts here what an expert has already confirmed!!!

Then you get responces from people suggesting you get a remapp when you clearly already stated you have a standard ECU...
You are asking for trouble.. :2Rolleyes

Yh cheers trex very helpful,

Car was booked in at pips for a last minute Comp check, He did not have time to look it over and tbh I was not aware it needed anything other than a comp check. As the boost problem happened to me only once before I took it to WGT.

Inter cooler is standard it\'s only the air box that\'s been changed to an ARC 1, I have a different ECU but it\'s for 100 ron fuel and so I won\'t be fitting it. I can\'t afford to throw another £500 at it at the moment, So I think I\'ll throw the original air filter back on tomorrow and if that doesn\'t fix it try the fuel pump and then if that\'s not sorted it I\'ll leave it stood until a warm day and try again. Got a feeling it could just be the cold air.

The reason I asked on here is simply because PIP\'s suggestion was vary vague and it has been much much worst today than before, But today was very cold. Not knowing much about rx7\'s I don\'t see the harm in getting other people\'s opinions tbh.

Only skimmed through the post, didn\'t realise it was a standard ECU setup :2Rolleyes

Pip has been playing with these cars much longer than most if not all of the other proffesional garages, so I would believe he will know more or less what he is saying, also especially having had the car himself to know your specs.

I am all for trying to get advise and having a fix yourself, but as you have also stated you had previous bad luck with cars and also have little or no experience,  I would suggest if you are really concerned, then you should consider calling him up again and tell him it\'s doing it more often and see what he suggests.

And for what it\'s worth I also believe it\'s Boost Cut you are experiencing..
And it \'may\' be a quick cheap fix so don\'t panic just yet! :o

Well hopefully boost cut is all it is, Whats your suggested fix? I don\'t have time to run it to pip for at least a fortnight and tbh I\'ts the 1st RX7 I have had, But about the 100th car I have had what with being in the trade. So I wouldn\'t suggest im a novice with mechanics. Not suggesting pip was wrong, All I said was he had the car maybe 12 minutes and was not shown the problem just given a quick description of the 1 time it happened. I don\'t really want to mess about with mods as it will invalidate my insurance. Everything else on it is declared.

As TRex has said, Pip knows his stuff. I have to say though, he\'s less bothered about customer service than he used to be a few year ago... or maybe I just caught him on a bad day (I suppose we all have them!).

Had some work done a couple of months ago and left the car with him (month or so) so he had as much time as required to complete the list of jobs. Was told car was ready for collection by receptionist and when I picked it up a few of the jobs weren\'t done will no real reason why. Ok they were smallish jobs that weren\'t as \'Hollywood\' as engine rebuilds and dyno tuning, lol, but nevertheless I was willing to pay for these jobs to be done with no time limit, etc.

Just smacked of arrogance really as probably couldn\'t be bothered to do some mundane jobs when he always has a steady supply of customers with a waiting period to get the car booked in.

Will be taking my car elsewhere in future, even if it means travelling much further. Shame really as used to be happy with their service, ce la vie!
