Leaking wastegate?

Hi guys

recently noticed that i can hear some engine noise coming from the screamer pipe when idling and running at low revs  on my single tub externally gated fd. Just wondering if this is normal? I was under the impression that the gate should be closed to aid in spooling up?

Will this cause me any other problems? and is it possible to fix with out modifying how much boost it\'ll run?

What wastegate? Is it a cheap sh!t eBay one? If so, then yeah, it\'s probably leaking.

It should be closed on idle and off boost.

Sounds like the wastegate is stuck open. Could either be a knackered actuator / spring / something stuck in the valve seat preventing it fully closing.

Things to do:

1) adjust the spring pressure (depending on type)
2) give it a clean (easier on external wastegate)
3) change the spring if it\'s rubber ducked

***Be careful though, if you set spring pressure too high you run the risk of boost creep which is not good!***

Another thought - do you have a boost controller? This sets the pressure at which the wastegate opens, check the settings to confirm it\'s not been accidently set too low.

well its an HKS external sitting on a t04r.

I would adjust the spring pressure but the car is mapped for how it\'s currently working. So i wouldn\'t be able to really run on boost untill its mapped.

Also yes I do have a boost controller but not fitted, though I\'d rather just run off the waste gate spring pressure. So are these external jobbies easy to take out and have a look at ? Guess I\'ll just have to get it working then go get a remap, not something i want to take a chance on really.

My greddy external off  a TD06 did this, and so does my HKS external off a T04. Sounds like the exhaust is leaking. But once out of vacuum it shuts up. From what I\'ve been told it\'s nothing to worry about. Both were running off the spring, not sure if this is related.

ah right. Think I\'ll take it a part and have a gander. There shouldn\'t be any noise coming from the screamer. If the gate is leaking then surely it would make the turbo hit full boost later

i had the same thing when i was on the dyno the other week and i took the gate off and the diaghram insude wasnt seating propoerly.. Reseated it and it was all good.

Not been on here for a while and was just having a browse to see how my old car is now.  I\'m sure there may actually be a hole somewhere near the wastegate where a sensor goes, when we fitted the single tubby didn\'t put it in and I never got round to fitting it, this may be what you can hear? But then it\'s always been like it.  So how is the car? Changed much?
