Jon, no-one bought BMWs under the scrappage, because the only people who exploited the scheme were idiots who know or care nothing about cars. Which is why they had hitherto been happy to trog about in sub-2k shltboxes....which they then scrappage-ed for a new Hyundai because they know/care so little about cars that they think a five-year warranty is the most important factor in chosing a new car, not having the brain God gave the hole in a cow\'s arse to see that by the time the warranty has expired your average (and I do mean average) Hyundai will be worth a bag of crisps. Only with slightly worse build quality . The only way scrappage would have helped Britain is if everyone bought Micras, Civics, Transits or Rolls-Royces under the scheme, as they\'re the only cars still actually made in Britain :3Confused

I was going to put Rolls instead of Lambos...but then realised that actually they are made near you aren\'t they?  Just near Goodwood.

It could have been a real boost to the British car industry....but I think the government ....ed up monumentally with the way it ran the scheme!!

I cant believe everyone used it to buy Hyundai\'s though....as they processed 200,000 cars!  Thats a lot of taxis!!

I\'m basing that on a straw poll of the people at work who availed themselves of the incentive....all of whom bought Hyundais. Which was three.....not a statistically accurate sample, I\'ll grant you, but I bet it\'s represenative of the sort of thing that happened (or maybe says a lot about the sort of tragic people I work with lol). I reckon most people bought from the showroom offering the best finance package/warranty/etc rather than bought a specific model of car because they aspired to own it. The sort of people who had cars worth trading in under the scrappage scheme are the sort of people who just don\'t care about cars, all they want is the cheapest transport possible.

You do have a point, but not everyone has a passion for cars to the likes of you and I :)

Some people, and dare I say it, just buy a car to get them from A2B and dont really care how they look or how fast it gets them there!  More and more people are starting to care more about the environmental actions of buying the car (not sure how an Hyundai fits in there) rather than speed and comfort even.

As bonkers as that is, it is horses for courses much like you probably laugh everytime someone takes down your number as you speed past them on the platform!

Its most likely that people dont have the spare cash for a weekend car anymore, its difficult to run more than a few cars and insure and tax and then pay for the high fuel consumption as a weekend user.
