can I change the sump with the engine still in the car or do I need to lift the engine out? Anyone know?

Thats a good question.
Just been through the 84 manual but nothing in there.

I can\'t see any problems other than the steering centre link might need dropping.... unless anyone can think of anything else

Mine has no undertray at the mo so just got him out and had a squiz-took a picture too and like you said apart from the steering link it should come out without too much trouble.

You can change the sump with the engine in the car. You will have to raise the front slightly and probably drain the rad but it can be done.
I have done it several times trying to chase oil leaks. others may say the engine has to come out dude but that is not the case. Just be patient with it as the oil pick up will mean you have to give it a little jiggling

Aha I know know why you are changing it. Fair play. Yes it would make sense to take the whole lot out now to save launching tools at high speed around the garage....you only loose things that way. Pluse you can give every thing a good clean while you are at it.Are you going to use a paper or liquid gasket when you put the sump back on. I would go for paper if you can due to the first one on my 13b leaked more oil than a rig in the gulf. Once I changed to paper,no problems

Brian,

my sump gasket was a thick rubber gasket with a bit of silicon on it. Is this the type I should go for again? or a paper one?   The manual says bond the sump with a gasket and silicon????

Anyone else got any thoughts on it??

Always used paper/caf with a smear of blue silicone myself - hermatite I think.
As said months ago, whenever I used silicone on its own it occassionally leaked so now I only do the job once.
