hello peeps i have an rx7 1996 with apexi air induction and cat back exhaust. 1st of all do i need one and second can i just use the commander or ecu or both? cheers

As long as you still have your cat in place then i should be fine, Although if it feels like its loosing power over 6k or if you get it jerking around on wot (fuel cut) then you need a pfc. It is safer and hugely beneficial for you to just splash out on a pfc, decat and mapping but £800 unfortunately isnt always on the hip.
 
You cannot use the commander without the ecu but you can use the ecu without a commander but having most of your vital readings in front of you is worth the extra £120 imo.
