Sold my R32 GTR on Monday ..

Looking for a replacement and it\'s between a couple of cars, M3 or RX7.

(before I get flamed)..To be honest I\'ll only get an M3 if it\'s a great price and I\'ve seen a few recently for a quick sale and being as I\'ve got the cash sitting I\'d buy one and prob sell after a short while (otherwise known as zero turbo boredom, lol).

Anyway RX7 is a car I\'ve allways said I\'ll own, so maybe if the right car is around I\'ll get one.  Little bit concerned about the flooding and coolant leaks, but then I\'m a paranoid gauge watcher and I allways check my car\'s condition and health, so I think I\'d make a good owner

Question is (as I\'m a newbie), whats the one to go for?, looking to spend up to £7500, poss more if I sell my gti-r.  There seems to be a fair few models available.

Also anyone in south east area thats selling a nice one, drop me a line.  Ideally I\'d like some mods (wheels, exh, etc), and would consider a big power one

i aint no expert but an import sounds like an idea for u there are lodsa places all over the uk that will source u 1. i beleve collant leaks and floding are part of the joy when it coems to the rx7 but i wouldnt know coz we got the gratest joy of all :d one of thoes blown enging thingys dont let that put u of ave had a shot in a few rx7s and that second turbo is like a viagra :|

The RX7 gets this reputation as being a really unreliable car and spending more time in the garage than on the road.  Yes there are some cars that have major problems but the ones that run and run with no problems greatly outway these.  At the end of the day you will be getting a car than everyone will look at and think wow......now thats a car, they wouldnt take a second look at an M3, and performance that will piss all over the BMW.  For the money you have you probably will be looking at a 94ish model with no rebuild, rebuilds can be needed from anything from 40k upwards but so long as it has been looked after you can get 70k+.

In my eyes there is no doubt an RX7 is the car to go for unless you want to take the family out or have a bit of fun on the back seat (wink wink nudge nudge)

Is the performance much cop standard?, my GTR was circa 400bhp and could get a fair tramp on.  Obviously they are a bit smaller/lighter, I like the sound of the handling/brakes (I\'ve read they are good).

What sort of power is achievable on stage 1 mods (ie exhaust, filters, slight boost raise)?.

I would say around 300 hp, standard cars are about 260 hp and will do the quarter in 13 - 15 secs depending on the driver.  They are great round the twisty bits.

Mine had exhaust, induction kit, apexi ECU running 0.8 bar boost and it was about 291 hp

Well, how about the for sale section on this very site?  It\'s where I found my RX.  Everyone on here are enthusiasts by definition so any cars for sale from site regulars are likely to be in better shape than other private sales

Mine is completely stock, handles like a dream and accelerates like than a cartoon roadrunner.:rollin

I doubt you\'d be disappointed by the performance.  As Gman says it\'ll piss all over an M3 in a straight line and even more so on the bends.

Practicalities:
Don\'t buy if you\'re shy about filling the fuel tank.  Mods I\'m thinking about myself are a turbo timer, dump valve and a nosecone and bonnet combo that will increase airflow over the engine and keep it cooler - they run bloody hot as standard.  At a basic engine lifetime level, these will pay off so if you can find a car with these already fitted then that might be a good place to start.

Insurance can be a millstone but worth every penny, however I\'d suggest you try and organise a test drive in one and see if you feel the standard needs more power for what you want - no sense giving the money grabbing insurance folks more than you have to...  

There are costs with any car, but the grin factor on this is beyond compare unless you have a hell of a lot more money in your bank account....

Just out of interest, are you guys referring to the E36 or E46 M3? wondering as my friend had an E46 coupe, only mod was a de-limit and schnitzer exhaust, and the thing flew. from 100-150 it was very very quick. We did 175 in it in a fairly short distance (coming onto the A12 from a slip road at about 100).

I´ve often thought that considering the power-to-weight figure they shouldn´t be so fast. but i guess the completely flat underbelly etc helps at speed. he´s actually got the CSL now, and it´s a fair bit quicker. He´s done 170 at 6250, with plenty to go. apparently!

what kind of power figure do you guys run to be able to blow things like an M3 away? the E36 models aren´t so hot, 321bhp and about 5.4 to 60, but the new ones (343bhp i think) are pretty much 5 secs flat, and that´s before they really get moving.

thing is, i´ve GOT to be able to beat him when i buy the beasty, he´s been teasing me for so long that a rex will never stand up to bavaria´s finest...but i´m encouraged after reading this!

oh and jameswrx...the M3 is nice in my opinion as a crusier, a sophisticated and rapid straight line machine...but has to make concessions for reasons of practicality and luxury. it´s not nearly as focused as a rex, and after having been driven at speed in both, not only does the rex FEEL faster (M3 is just too...comfy) it simply leaves it for dead in the twisties!

well i raced a new m3 and nearly went into the back of it as it was too slow:rolleyes:  but then again mines is making around 450 - 460 bhp so no wonder really;)

Yea the boost was up quite high, but booked in for remap on 4th june so can run even higher ....hopefully, found i have apexi ecu so easier to work with.

Was looking to run at rotorstock but gonna wait until remaps done before 1/4 runs.
