I agree if I was doing full on motorsport, or doing something where I am likely to roll the car then yes I wouldnt scrimp and save, at the end of the day that is highly unlikely, and this is from more of an aesthetic (sp) point of view

If I ever got competitive, I would have the equipment to suit

A cage for aesthetics?

Come on dude, you\'ve got a proper car - do it properly!

I can see peoples point of view that a cage isn\'t a cheap option. It isn\'t!

I guess it depends on the type of cage you either fit....or have fitted. The cages I quoted for are a multi-point cage. This has:
Main hoop
Door hoops
Transverse bars above and below the windscreen
Cross in the roof
Cross in the main hoop and cross down to the rear strut towers
Double door bars
Extensions to the front strut towers.

The same cage from Custom Cages (As linked above) is £648+VAT

The key to a good cage is that the shell needs to be straight from the outset! We make sure the chassis is as straight and as level as possible, so no point in having your struts at different lengths putting a twist into the shell, as once the cage is in place.....that twist will be there for life!

We are having a new workshop built at the moment, and in there will be a cast iron floor. The chassis can then be bolted to the floor and pulled straight in this instance....thus guaranteeing the car is as straight as possible.

The next part is to make sure the cage is as close and snug as is possible. Ideally the panels need to be taken out, but obviously this all adds to the cost!

Making sure the welds are perfect. I have seen a number of examples where the gas hasn\'t flowed properly and this leaves the weld porous. Putting the welder under a time constraint isn\'t a good ploy either, as those hard to reach areas will be missed.

The benefits of having a decent cage are amazing.  Apart from the obvious of it saving your life, it also stiffens up the chassis.  The suspension is able to work efficiently, as it has a static platform to work from, rather than added flex.  This will improve your cornering and braking ability.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day.  If you want a half cage then we can do that, if you want a bolt in cage, again something else we can do.  The bonus about bolt in, will be that once it is done....we can get it powdercoated, so no need to spend vast amounts of cash getting it sprayed.

If done properly a bolt in cage is strong!  There are plenty of high spec race cars with bolt in cages....but as someone has pointed out, if done as it is meant to, it isn\'t just a case of drill a few holes and bolt it in.  You still have to add the stress plates, otherwise you would just rip out the cage in a crash.

Whilst i agree totally with what you say Jon in my instance a cheap and cheerful bolt in cage would suffice. Im not competing, can weld in my own stress plates and im not willing to spend nearly 5times what the car cost me to put in a cage which in my instance is totally other the top.

Dont get me wrong if the time ever arose that i did end up competing then the bolt in cage would come out and be replaced with a weld in cage.

AtomicRex

What sort of Bolt in cage do you want?  This is for an FD correct??

The cost, similar to the link from Custom Cages, is determined by the number of bars you have.  The cost is very little to have a single roll over hoop, to getting a full on cage.  Are you intending to keep the interior?

lee mills

Its for my project  fc jon Just looking for a simple 6 point cage. Theres no interior in it ( other than dash) The car is only for a bit of track/drift fun:chat

AtomicRex

Id be happy to do you a good deal on being the guineapig :)

Whats your budget?  Be sensible with that answer...dont say 50p!

lee mills

Havent really set a budget just cheaper the better:o to be honest with you been looking at how i can get one over from japland as there only £275 but if you want pm me what sort of deal your thinking of.

im sure if the price was right youd sell a reasonable amount of these

Im just looking for the same as lee ha said for my fc, probably just a rear cage

as shown below

Can get them imported from japan for around £170 inc shipping, then looking at fitting after that

Car at the minute is a show car, but will get the odd usage ona  track but nothing mental

Currentlly got a harness fitted which is already bolted to the floor plan so no need for a harness bar

I understand the process and the need for a fully fitted certified rll cage, but Im not going to be giving the car that sort of usage to require one

Interior wise, I would be happy to strip out if required as there are no point in the back seats anyway

To go up and above to get to a 6 point cage your looking at around £300 as above, however depending who u try to get it through there are limits with shipping etc due to parcel size

Rear cages have gone up for sale on here before for £180-£200 and have been snapped up within minutes

Im more than happy to spray it myself and get an experienced welder to fit who has had experience of cages previously

Just my opinion really

lee mills

Just noticed srbpower do some for about £400 dont know if there website has current prices though

the hat

right if none of you have noticed the cages on ebay from japan will be scrap metal when they arrive as he states in the packaging part that the larger bars will be cut in half to save on shipping so no point in buying them

lee mills

I think youll find thats why none of us have bought it already:Thumbsup!

AtomicRex

I spoke to Lee at length yesterday about this, and if we can get 5 people together I will make a bolt in cage package together.

The standard cage will be a 6 point cage.  There will be a few optional extras:
Harness Bar
Door bars
Powder coating
And we can fit the cages if you prefer.

I will get back today with a price, but it is going to be in the region of £500

flatout
