Count me in, I hate paying that amount of road tax. I dont see why I pay two lots of road tax for two cars when I can only drive one at a time.

Classic car tax, when this was first introduced it was for cars over 25 years old, but the labour gov\'t decided in their wisdom to stop this, so only pre 1972 cars can now claim this. As most of our cars now over 25 years old, we should have been not paying any tax.
I have read many theards on this subject of paying less tax, but it appears unless the car was an import the revenue just dont want to know.
I wonder if we did have free or lower tax how many of these cars would be on the road today, after all how much would the revenue lose if they did give us cheaper tax as there are not that many 12a\'s still on the road.
Then again if they were to add the road tax to petrol everybody would pay some amount of road tax, and the more you used the roads the more you paid, I know its ok for me to say that as I do not do that much mileage these days and have a few cars, but there are some in our society who dont want to pay any form of tax.............sorry for going on a bit but I\'m waiting for the coach to go to football.

When we\'ve had prime ministers and secretary of state for transport who can\'t even drive, it\'s no wonder that the goverment is unsympathetic to drivers.
We are just viewed as a revenue source, nothing more.
A change of goverment say 5 years ago may have got the rolling exemption re-instated but in the current dire financial climate, no matter who\'s in power will be looking to maximise tax revenue, not cut them ( even by small amounts).
I don\'t think any gov will agree to grant more exemptions unless they can cover it under under the \'green\' thing and even then, they will put in a stealth tax to recover the \'giveaway\' so we\'re no better off.
It\'s all smoke and mirrors.
Do they really want us to go green, give up our cars of choice and drive around in hybrids doing 80 mpg.
Of course not, they want us to continue doing 20mpg and then sting us by way of fuel duty. They can\'t afford to lose the revenue.
Pretending to force us to go green by duty increases on everthing from fuel to flights is just a way of justifying more unwarranted, outrageous tax increases.
I reckon the only way to reclassify the cc is to change the engine as Mark did and then have it recorded as 1.3.
The fairest and most logical way would be for the gov to scrap the excise duty and put it on fuel but then, when did logic and fairness ever come into it?
My daily driver is registered in 2001 and costs £240 a year to tax.
The identical car registered 3 months earlier cost £180 a year to tax.
It\'s just highway robbery but it\'ll only get worse. Road tax and fuel  will only continue to rise so we should just make the most of it now and enjoy our cars until they finally price us off the roads
Just my cynical view...

I think it\'s about time the government wake up and realise the only way to collect road tax fairly is to put it on fuel so you effectively get charged per, not to mention the saveings in collecting the money and policeing it.

One little voice for the other point of view. We know our cars are 20 mpg fuel hungry machines. It\'s often not appreciated that CO2 produced is directly in proportion to fuel consumption. So under the CO2 rules for 2001 cars onwards it matters not that the newer RX8 has a swept volume of 1300cc or whatever it is, it pays the same tax as a big Merc or whatever, no way out of it.

The DVLA just have to point to the spirit of the whole CO2 taxation regime to demolish any challenge we might put up against the earlier car tax.

THATS NOT TO SAY I AGREE WITH PAYING £190 FOR 2000 MILES A YEAR ON POTHOLE FILLED ROADS.

Don\'t misunderstand me, I agree with all the sentiment above about Shxte non driving politicians who have no idea, I\'m just pointing out the the taxation as it applies to rotaries is maybe fairer than most seem to think.

The road tax situation on rotaries is inconsistent, some pay cheap tax others, the full whack.
With every other manufacturer the gov taxes on the manufacturers stated engine cc.
Mazda have stated the engine cc\'s for rotaries, but the gov in the majority of cases doubles mazda\'s stated engine cc & taxes accordingly!
I have a 12a,but on my V5 it\'s 2300cc!

David Nock (RIP)

The inconsistency has developed with engine changes and imports since the UK cars were new. Yes, 2300cc, that was the position reached when the cars were first taxed...A rotary pays on its capacity times 2. I believe Mazda were in on the discussions at the time.

A piston engine fires once only every 2 crank revs. What does a rotary do? a lot more than that in terms of power firings every 2 eccentric shaft revs. Hence it has the power   (and the thirst) of a 2.3 litre 1979 designed car
