Replacing pads all round as there getting near the limit, and ive been recommended a set of black diamonds. Anyone had any experience with \'em?

Extent of my knowledge of black diamond gear is a set of their discs on my old, almost ashamed to say it, saxo ( i got mine b4 they were a boy racer fav!) which were good but obviously no comparison as im guessing the old rex has a bit stronger brakes than the laxo:D and they were discs not pads of course.

cheers!

I haven\'t used them personally, I\'ve got Hawk Fast Road Pads on mine but I am interested in changing as the amount of brake dust is geting silly !

ScuttleRX

I got recommended to go to shy autos, and they\'ve recommended black diamonds, so just seeing how other people have got on with \'em.

Yeah i\'ve heard that bout hawks, theyre a bit squeaky as well arent they? whats the actual braking of \'em like?

davefrith

They work very well, I\'ve had them on track and they faded a lot but seem fine for road use,  never noticed any squeaking to be honest although some people do
I\'d reccomend them

I\'m just trying to get pads that chuck off less dust as I don\'t have time to clean my alloys every day and the brake dust is unbeliveable !!

ScuttleRX

lol, i know its a pain. I had a set of EBC\'s on the saxo which had virtually no brake dust but ive been told theyre a no-go on a rex so im steering well clear

davefrith

yeah i heard the Green Stuff EBC pads were a bit shite so I steered clear

Think you will find black diamond are disc\'s not pads, my black car has black diamond drilled and grooved disc\'s which I will be putting on yellow and upgrading the black a little later. I use hawk pads, fan bloody tastic but dust like you wont believe so much that with hawk plus on rear and hawk ht10 on front, have never faded on track and squeak is set dependant, one set does and then the next set dosnt. Front dust has soooo badly damaged laqu on front wheels that brick acid and wire wool will not remove it so will have to get them refurbed.

I thought the same so checked the website and it turns out they do pads aswell now. Main reason I know bugger all about them as i didnt know they existed till yesterday :D

Cheers for info on Hawks, i\'d like to get some pads with as little brake dust as poss but not gonna compromise performance for it.

sorry if it is a bit of thread hijack but i used ebc red stuff on my t2 and they were ok the only problem i had regarding brakes was that the brake fluid gave up before the pads did. But hey it was donington which is known to be a brake killer. Also if you guys think that ebc is a no go why you say this as i would like to know because i am not very experienced on track and maybe that is why i have not had any problems with them.
cheers all

To be fair I havent heard much bad about the pads, ive heard of  people warping the discs though.
Just generally got warned off EBC products

Got Hawks fitted to the FD as it came into the country with Greenstuff already fitted. Noticeable difference, in dust and stopping distances! Fitted the Hawks cause the Greenstuff pads were pants!

Also had Greenstuff pads fitted to the FTO, but changed them to MIntex 1155\'s which were fantastic. Little dust and once they got some heat into them had great stopping power. Im tempted to get a set for the FD although they are a little expensive. Twice the proce of Hawks.

used to have green stuff on me scoob & OK for non OTT road use but they do have a bad rep for totally feking up in particular discs when given it large!!! http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/28/28_1_7.gif\' border=0>

so you guys are not mad keen on the ebc pads, ok then i have heard quite a few good reports with reference to the mintex 1144 and 1155s but where can i find more information on them like for instance what temperature do they operate from you might say are ok for road use 0c to what temperature, i think if i remember rightly the redstuff worked straight away and right upto 750c the letter c means celsius, then i think you could make a fair judgement as to which is better

1155\'s are illegal for road use, (it says so on the box!!), however they are damn fine pads and I might just be tempted to get another set even considering the price. They did however last a good length of time on the FTO which was a little heavier then the FD. Did two track days at Goodwood and another at Castle Coomb where I got the brakes so hot I melted the spigot rings in the wheels! I did not however suffer any fade.

Try looking up the tech info on the Mintex site, but from memory 1155\'s have to get to something like 65 deg before they start to work properly.

Have no experience of the 1144\'s

Hi All,

Mintex 1144\'s would have been a good all round pad for the FD as would Ferodo DS compounds, but sadly neither company make these in the dimensions of the FD pad, so you can\'t fit them !

You will find l have written this stuff up elsewhere on the site, but here we go l will bore you all again with not only my opinions but also what l have actually seen and know !

I personaly beleive EBC discs on an RX-7 really are downright dangerous, l have seen several cars with blued, warped and even cracked discs !!

On other makes l have seen again and again that for instance that if you use their Green Stuff one car will go through them in literally a couple of thousand miles and another identical car will be wearing their Discs out as they are so dammed  hard ! apparently they go to Taiwan or China to fulfil their stock orders and the poor customer either ends up with granite pads or cardboard depending on who made them  !

l have found all this puzzling though as they have an excellent  reputation in the bike world !! but sadly not the car world , l have implored my members not to fit EBC for the above safety reasons.

The Hawk HP+ pads are perfectly OK, but have two down sides they are a bit grab n stop, and messy ( lots of FD owners moan about the dust )

If HP+ is fitted to the front they really do need to be fitted to the back as well, one of my first upgrades to my FD around 6 years ago was HP+ on the front and l found l was chattering the front tyres on the ABS on a dry road due to insufficient braking on the rear, l fitted them to the rear within a week as l felt the car was unsafe for my driving !!!!

If  however you are into a fair few trackdays and don\'t wish to spend lots of money H10\'s with HP+ fitted to the rear coupled with braided brake lines and good brake fluid gives an excellent low budget brake set up.

Downside to H10\'s is that they can squeal and need a bit of heat in them so they work efficiently.

This thread started with the question about Black Diamond Pads, these have only been on the market a couple of months to fit the FD but they appear so far to be a good fast road pad for the FD with little dust compared to the HP+ and not quite so grab n stop as the HP+.

I wanted something a little different on my car and wanted a calliper that would let me fit Ferodo, because of my conversion l am able to fit DS2500 in the front but l use the \'\'bite \'\' of the HP+ in the rear to keep my brake balance (bias) good.  //www.shyauto.com/yellowbrakes

Hope all this boring info helps someone !, l will get off me soap box now, grab me coat and leave you all to it now.
All the best Clive
