So I bought an engine off these forums a few months ago. What you would call a "known good" engine taken out of a running car. Have had my car in at a specialist this week to get it fitted and it turns out it has a chipped apex seal and no compression on the front rotor.

Absolutely gutted. I seem to be doomed to never have a working rx7.

Anything I can do? I\'ve obviously racked up a bill to get the engine fitted.

An engine thats running and working seem to be two entirely different things in an RX-7.

Did you ask for compression test before you bought it?  Did you hear the engine "running" before you bought it.  Or did you just take it from somebodys word for it.

Problem is with private sold as seen sales there\'s no real come back, unless the seller has any morals?...

Not alot you can do im afriad.  Rebuild if you can be bothered with the hassle?

Are you saying you bought an engine that was already out a car and you never heard it running?

Did you ask why it was out of the car etc.

I can\'t see what you can do. Perhaps the guys who fitted it will have some sympathy and look kindly on the bill, after all they may get the job twice more.

Well I didn\'t hear it myself, but the engine was sold to me as having good compression, starting hot and cold and driving great. All quotable too.

The company who are fitting it are brilliant by the way. Such a shame that i\'m in this pickle!

gutted i think there should be an un written rule anything sold on here you abide to a seller buyer club contract any issiues then item is returned and money given back ! keeps everyone happy and if the seller was not to blame then concious free but protects the buyers for ........s selling bad bits .we all like to make money but not when its at the exspence of someone either trusting you or you just trying to pull the wool over some nieve person .

Unfortunately I can\'t see that working.

Lets say I sold a radio, knowing full well it was working when I took it out of my car.

The buyer then says it doesn\'t work, who knows what happened after he took it:

Dropped it, spilled water on it, wired it wrong etc etc.

I think like most things it\'s up to the purchaser to make sure what he buys works before buying it, then everyone is happy and no comebacks.

I wouldn\'t buy anything without seeing it work, if I did it would have to be reflected in the price.

From the clubs point of view I don\'t think there is any way MRC should become involved apart from allowing feed back etc.

I\'ve contacted the lad I bought it off so will see what happens. In the meantime I\'m tempted to cut my losses and get rid of the car. What\'s a good rolling chassis FD worth nowadays?

I don\'t want to start any baiting, I\'m just a bit peed off at now having a huge bill to fit a knackered engine. I\'ve basically shunted 1300 on buying an engine and getting it fitted and am no better off than before.

sorry to hear you have this problem, if the seller is of a decent upstanding chap may be he could compensate you a little, how ever the old remit in this sort of situation is buyer beware

As this was a private sale there\'s no redress for you (e.g. sale of goods act, etc).  If the seller is a decent bloke then you might get some gesture of goodwill.  If not then you\'d have to sue privately and be able to prove you didn\'t cause the damage.  I suspect you\'d be on a hiding to nothing.

Odd though - apex seals don\'t chip themselves!

despite the despondent views above regarding returns/compensation (which unfortunately i agree with) it still sucks bigtime, whoever sold it to you if they knew it was a duff engine is an extremely poor character and ought to be ashamed of themselves. Poor you - it\'s cr@p.

Anyone who buys stuff off forums including this one and ebay ought to know there are enough dodgy people out there to make it a big risk with this amount of money involved and take necessary precautions. I\'m usually very careful but i\'ve still lost around £500 over the last few years from fwits if you add it all up, and there\'s f-all you can do about it. there is no easy answer, its easy to say \'just buy new\', or \'don\'t buy off forums\' but that option isn\'t available to everyone.

I have the car back now, and had a good chat with Dwayne from Lindop / Silverstone Autosport about it this morning.

I\'m not discounting the fact it might be a stuck seal rather than a chipped one, however unlikely that is. In spite of this, i\'m sick of the car and spunking money so it\'s now for sale.... will stick a thread up.

I drove it back from Queensferry, a good 30 mile drive and it actually.... runs rather well. I don\'t know what a car with a knackered seal feels like but it revved very freely and seemed ok. Idle is quite high at over 1000 rpm but I dunno, do these engines ever "unstick" themselves?

I don\'t think i\'ll be getting any money back at this rate, but i\'ll stick this one down as experience. I\'d definitely recommend Silverstone Autosport btw if anyone is in the North West.
