Are you going to be removing that 54mm bolt that I can\'t remember the purpose of? You\'ll need a 54mm socket for that :)

Nik da Greek

The 52mm nut is on the flywheel isn\'t it? Hopefully we don\'t need to furkle around with that. I\'ll bring along a load of stuff with me, Adman. Got some stout breaker bars for you to get Herculesian with :rollin. Also have a proper paper workshop manual that may prove of some use ;)

EDIT...thinking about it, isn\'t it a 54 mm nut anyway?

Edit agian, you said 54mm in the first place, ignore me, I\'m being a spazz.

Ahh so all i need then is a Nik! :D
Thanks matey :Thumbs-up

There are performance cars and then there is the RX-7...........

12.3 second 1/4 mile, terminal speed of 122mph (1st ever drag run on a TO4R)

engine built by....... umm me! now powered by a T51 Kai......

Ada7

The water seals on on their way out so getting it re done. Is your\'s a 99 model engine?

Dont really know myself. I\'m keeping my fingers crossed that it\'ll just be the water seals and maybe some springs that need replacing so shouldnt cost me much to get sorted.
Thanks anyway :D

I took mine out with jsut a sicket set, spanner (17mm IIRC? For the engine mounts) and a crane. And 3 mates :D

Have you started costing it yet? While mine\'s out, I\'m tempted to strip, port, and re-seal, but am loathed to tear down a perfectly working engine!

I thought the flywheel was a 54mm? unless thats only for an FC? I ordered a 54mm and they sent out a 58mm socket by mistake hehe its on my desk right now, tis fab for using as a phone holder :D

i would advise slackening the subframe bolts off so that it drops down ever so slightly as i had problems with the engine mounts fowling.

I had that too - ended up undoing the main bolts that go through the subby, lifting the engine a bit, then undoing the bolts that hold the engine mounts to the block, and taking the mounts off. Gave me a shedload of clearance :)

i struggled to get the mounts off for ages, bloody things :(

the next time the engine came out i just undid the 3 bolts at either side but not completely taking them off, then with a pry bar either side, making the subframe that little bit lower and the whole lot just popped out :yes

If the engine is going off to someone, then the 2 most awful nuts are staying on ;) - that\'s your flywheel nut (big one) and the one at the front in the centre of the pulley stack - both of those require a massive amount of torque to shift - a couple of big blokes on the end of 6 foot of bar with 3/4 or 1 inch drives and hex sockets will usually get them moved :Thumbs-up

Other than that - get yourself some duck oil or plus gas - to free up any awkward bolts / nuts - normal socket set is all you\'ll need - but if you get stuck for any tools give us a shout - I\'m collecting a growing toolset for these jobs now - have a transmission jack if you\'re taking the gearbox out, but it won\'t support the engine weight. I think you can just undo the engine from the gearbox and leave that in situ.

Socket set and a crane is really all you need.

I\'ve done it 3 times now.

Last time the engine was wedged in somehow, not sure what on. Possibly an engine mount? All of a sudden it came flying up after a heap of wiggling.

I think it\'s an arse pain is it gets stuck on the gbox and some other bits. Sometimes it\'s a complete doddle, other times it takes alot of swearing!

Putting it back in is just as much of a pain in the arse! Rebuilding it is less hassle than removing and fitting the engine!!
