I am converting a FC EGI engine from Dizzy and oil filled coils, to coil packs and crank angle sensor, via an aftermarket engine management system. I have a set of coil packs from a later engine but I\'m not sure if the igniters/modules are built into the coilpacks or if the are seperate? If they are seperate how many are needed, ie. do they come in one unit, so I can find secondhand parts?

Thanks for any help.

Ignitors are seperate on the FD, contact Tim at RXMotors he has loads of bits

I can send you the trailing and leading coil packs if you want and will fit straight into the EGi but the wiring will have to be sorted for them though. Just email me as per below.

Thanks for the offer but already have all 4 of the coilpacks its just the ignitors that supply power to them that I need.

The ignitors are built into the coilpacks?? or are they not FC ones?

FC DF coil packs have the ignitors built into the base pack
-- the trailing pack is VERY different to the FD in operation
if you have FC ECU,, YOU MUST use an FC trailing pack

-- the FC trailing pack has a unique "toggle" function that allows essentially the two coils to operate independently from one another , yet using the same ignition pusle signal

-- ie,, essentially its a two channel,, with toggle system
( while FD is a three channel system )

OK, now I\'m really confused (my first rotary and I\'m in at the deep end!). I\'m not sure where the coil packs came from (FC or FD) but they are all connected together on one bracket and have a single 4-way connector. They will be connected to a Haltech ECU so as long as the settings are correct it shouldn\'t matter what car the coil packs came from.

Cheers for the replies.

Dont be confused......looks like you do have the FD coilpacks and will need the ignitors, think it was just that you mentioned an EGI engine and assumed you had the FC stuff to go with it.

if you are using the haltech to drive it,, then the point is moot,,
the haltech will configure to "distributor mode"
to run stock FC coils, igniter and toggle system,, all with a couple of keystrokes

it will also run in direct fire mode,, that is run 4 individual coil igniters,, sequentially
(
that\'s
what you have when you go 4 coils,, or FD coil packs )

with haltechs,, you must also remember that E6 models will waste spark the leading
(
ie
run in 3 channel mode DF )
[ not a huge deal unless using revs and boost beyond 9000 rpm ]
and that earlier than e6k ( E6s, E6H, E6m, E6a  ) usually cannot run "dumb" igniters unless custom,, or final builds
ie
,, they need a BIM 137 per coil

IMO,, if running a modern haltech,, the best thing
( and sometimes cheaper option )
is to run four ls1 coils with inbuilt pseudo smart dumb igniters
( even better,, is to get the ls2 truck coils with the heat-sink inbuilt )

these can be surprisingly cheap,, ( compare them to Mazda coil prices ! )
and very, VERY strong setups
