Hi All

Can anyone tell me how much torque my RX7 would produce, twin turbo, with supporting mods producing around 350 BHP

What is torque really and what does it mean in practical terms?

How does it compare to 911, skylines, evos, M3s ect

Regards,
Michaelb

Pop it on a dyno fella , only real way of knowing.

Mine got 306hp and 290lbs/ft @ 0.8 bar and,
326hp and 304 lb/ft @ 0.9 bar.

On twins with bolt-ons tuned by pip

I personally think rotaries make good torque figures but that is coming from an ex honda owner ( the mecca for low torque figures )

so whats 304 lb/foot torque in comparison to ther cars then? im not googling it.

HP sells cars, torque wins races. Apparently.

tried to find a list of torque figs for cars but only found this

no help at all really

oh and this

Most torque
  • Diesel - 1000 N·m (738 ft·lbf), Audi Q7 V12 TDI 6.0 L (5934 cc/362 in³) Twin Turbo V12
WOW!

Most specific torque (torque per unit displacement)
The mean effective pressure (MEP) is a useful comparison tool, giving the average cylinder pressure exerted on the piston.
do its pretty darn tourquey ? NO? yes?

On the grand sceam of things, piston engines produce more torque, 300bhp RB25 skyline GTSt would be knocking out about 340flb, basicaly the 6 cylinder & V8\'s produce mega torque!! realy we should all be looking at torque figures if we are looking at a vehicles performance as it is this that accelerates the vehicle. If you look at a dyno, the tourque comes in alot sooner (anything up to 3000rpm sooner) than the peak bhp. this is why it is easy to spin the wheels on a rear drive V8 compaird to a revy high bhp rear drive car. it\'s also the torque that destroys drive trains ;)

Hi

Thanks for your replies

OK, so torque wins races, does it apply to drag racing or track?

What is more important for drag racing â€" bhp or torque or do they both go hand in hand?

I thought that an RX7 was quite good at the mid range in comparison to other performance cars…is the mid range what you need the torque for?

Doers any one know what 2005 911 turbo produces?

Tourque wins the race... but like you said, they go hand in hand. in drag it\'s more to do with the BHP as you are top end of the rev range all the time, where as tourque gives you the initial punch, so on track the higher the torque the better you can exit the corners ;)

On a very light car Torque is less important, F1 cars dont produce that much torque in relation to their bhp.
In terms of drag racing for example saw a 911 Turbo much more torque then my car with 4wd do a 12.5\'s on the strip, Im doing 11.5 a second quicker, im perhaps was developing only 30bhp more then him at a Bar of boost and he is developing a lot more torque.
In drag racing torque does not win races.
Its BHP versus power to weight ratio is the key factor.
Look at the Caterham 7 (500 model I think) on the top gear track fduk all torque on the engine, but beats a Bugatti Veryon with over 1000NM of torque by a long way.

Its BHP/Weight ratio is the key to win races along with grip

Torque wins races is the biggest myth. It\'s about uasble power which is normaly way up the rev range just look at f1 or any other motor racing.

BlitzBoy

Exactly Timmy you are correct and an American Myth at that lol

Timmy

Born from there inability produce a v8 that revs over 6k rpm.

BlitzBoy

Yep lol

Torque is needed if you have to move around big heavy vehicles eg Trucks, trains, yank tanks

Hence why diesels are great at doing this.

The reason why Audi Leman Cars diesels win at endurance racing as they are able to go much longer between fuel stops

Well torque wins races believers... you got told! Lol
As has been said its an American myth but then again everything in America comes in large quantites they need loads of torque to get their big boned cars to go anywhere.
That\'s why they all love the stupid v8 lump, because they need such a big engine to move the yank tanks they call cars.
Torque never has and never will win races... its all about what\'s been said above that has been the distinguishing factor in a race.

BlitzBoy

In top Fuel Drag Racing they have to becareful not to produce too much torque on the V8s early on, as they lose time when they break traction. These are Monstors producing 8000-10000 hp top end on Nitro fuel
