i\'m looking at getting a few gauges (oil temp, water temp, boost) and i was wondering if anyone has put their oil gauge senders in the sump?

i don\'t really want to tap a hole in it, has anyone managed to mount a sender where the drain plug normally is? reckon it\'d be possible to tap a hole for the sender through the actual drain plug?

meddy

I did this on one of my old cars. Its fine. You just need to be carefull when you want to drain it.

is it not easier to take the reading from the oil filter using a pedastol ( and then you can get pressure aswell ) ???

i was thinking of the sandwich plate route (this one looks pretty good, if the size fits http://www.rspec.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=87_89) but i\'ve heard they\'re a little bit prone to leaking?

I ran this in my race car.....I wouldn\'t recommend it though.  I will concede it worked fine, but it was a git to take the sump plug out...and if you go grass tracking...you run the risk of losing your sensor.

my car is a daily driver so i probably won\'t be flying into any gravel traps soon!

what size bolt/plug did you use Batman? i read somewhere that it\'s 14mm x 1.5mm?

thanks,

I would just get an oil drain plug instead of the sump plug and put in a sandwich plate, I did on my old car, means that you can get pressure and temp, AND you can add in an extra oil cooler :)

i borrowed one from hayward but just go and ask for one from mazda and a compression washer and drill carefully

to be honest i just did the same thing, you can get sump plugs from ebay that have the boss drilled, however i really really wouldnt do it, i would go for a sandwhich plate, if you clean surfaces and fit it right they are fine, mine has 4 take offs, im using it for oil temp and pressure, and has the extra two if i wanted to fit another oil cooler but why i would want 3 is beyond me lol!

another reason i would say go plate rather than plug.... i went out on sat and around here there were some pretty strong winds, lots of branches and trees down, on sunday i went to go out in the car and reversed off the drive and heard a scraping noise, got out looked under the car and there was a fairly hefty branch wedged up the engine tray under the car... if my sender was in the sump plug i am pretty sure it would of ripped off, maybe not breaking the sump or the plug but pretty sure it would of broke the sender and they arent exactly cheap for greddy gauges.

I just drilled and tapped the banjo bolt that feeds the oil filter pedestal.

hmm, so i\'ve been talked around to sandwich plates! what size fitting is the standard mazda pedestal? i had a quick look in my manual but couldn\'t find anything...

m20 x1.5 i think, infact to make it easy this is the guy i got it from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...%3DI%26otn%3D2

someone else on here recomended him to me, so i went through him, parts are very good tbh was very happy, got the sandwich plate and a water temp sender holder from them too!
