Ha ha sorry for the suspense.. IT WAS A FLAT BATTERY! yey.. haha.. As soon as i got it started i shut the pc down and went out to have it checked.. seems my altenator has packed in and its not charging.. :(

I have no idea what this is and what kind of a price it will be to fix it.. anyone?

Brett

Just a get a second hand one - must be plenty around for not much ££ :)

Glad it was something simple.

the alt is the top most pulley attached to a big roundish thing.
there should be 2nd hand ones around fairly cheap on here.
quick 15min job to change =)
and thats for a non mechanic person.

Alternators can be removed and repaired at the side of the road, in the pouring rain, on the way to RotorStock if needs be - takes 20mins in those conditions :Giggle

how do you repair alternators..?
my uncles repairs them n he needs air gun to undo bolts (unless he just being lazy) then brushing it with a wire brush n replacing some o rings... is that it..?
and what would cause an alt to not charge..?
(sorry, think im jacking the thread a bit)

That is good news! I appreciate that guys.. Could you keep your eye open for me then if you spot any?

Out of interest.. can you tell me if all FC3s models will fit my car? As i\'m sure Jit would sell his.

Brett

I\'m 65% certain they are different from EGi to TII.

You need the airgun to spin the pulley nut off - the other ones that hold the alternator on will come off easy enough by hand tools.

What they repair is the internal electrics and sometimes they need rewinding, as the corrosive elements in the engine bay take their toll over a few years.  To be honest - you\'ll probably get a good used replacement or even a new one cheaper than a rewind/repair.  I\'m sure a TII one will fit - but not sure about pulley alignment - that\'s going to be where the problem is.

Got a feeling the plug is different from EGi - TII....

Not got any at my desk today, so can\'t be sure! :Giggle

Well todays plans went a bit pear shaped so she is back in the garage again.. If she starts up again in a few days with no problems then i can only assume it is fine and it just died with the coldness.. I\'ll keep you all updated.

I\'m away to cry.. :(

Brett

Take the battery out and put it on charge. :yes

If you don\'t I\'ll have to send the FC police around :spank

Have you got a voltmeter? Check the batteries voltage, you need to see 12.4v plus really, any less and its < 75% charged, and if you get it running check the voltage at the battery again and it should read 14v+ which would means a good alternator, much less then 14v and it could point to a cream crackered alternator.

Unfortunately i don\'t have a charger for it.. Can\'t really afford to fork out on one just now either. :(

Brett

I\'d still take it out of the car and keep it in the warm :)

I have seen different plugs to the back of the alternator and also different size eye end for the main power out cable but this will be evident in the size of the nut holding it on.
Think this may well be due to EGI/TII as all mine I have broken have been all 89+ TII cars and all UK variants. But.............. I did have an EGI engine and not sure if it came of that.  A picture of your plug will determine this.
