Stock FD over boosting

Guy\'s my FD is pretty much stock except for the mushroom air filter and back box. I have only driven it a few times since finishing it. Today whilst driving it I noticed that on hard acceleration the boost gauge was reading up to 16psi! I am pretty sure this cannot be right or good! How can this occur? I can hear what sounds like air leaking from an airline from inside the car when I accelerate? Is this normal or has a pipe come of somewhere maybe? the pipe appears to be attached to the boost sensor in the engine bay okay.. can\'t see where the other end goes though?
Any ideas please. If you accelerate slowly the boost settles at about 10psi which is what I assumed to be standard?

Thank you

If you change stuff like the exhaust or the intake its going to need a chipped ECU else it will boost spike some more.

Are they prone to boost spiking like that normally?? Surely a filter and back box won\'t make that much difference?

Usually need to go a bit more crazy with the mods to get horrible boost spikes, like a decat at least. General wisdom kinda leans towards changing the exhaust or induction but not both without upgrading the ecu and/or boost control, but with that said, on my first FD I had a wide open pipe with decat, filters, and no upgrade to the fueling or anything. It did used to boost spike quite a lot, but always fuel cut ok and never blew itself to bits. Obviously not ideal, though.

16 psi is pretty high! Probably not down just to your mods, though I\'m far too thick to be able to say what it is down to, sorry. Gutted to hear you\'ve got running problems after your massive epic build up. Try Super 7 near Henfield or RE Worx in Pompey for your nearest experts for a bit of diagnosis if you don\'t get it diagnosed by someone here

Cheers Nik, I am trying reworx.. See what they say. That being said I drove it to work today and no over boosting at all?!

I am a little deflated after my efforts to have problems straight away.. But I guess you live and learn! I am putting it slightly on the back burner for a few weeks as I have other stuff to sort out.. In the meatime I am trying to get a decent single tubro kit cheap or will rebuild a spare set of twins I have! Then  can have the mammoth task of changing that in situe and sorting my rear oil seal leak! If only I knew these problems could occur before I put it back together.. Hind sight is 20/20 so they say!

That should be my new tag I think!

Still it\'s nice to be driving her. even if it is with my heart in my mouth!!

Mine did this, the vac pipe had come off the wastegate actuator.  have a look under the airfilter area.

Have you just finished putting the whole engine together? Or parts of it..eg: some vacum lines perhaps? Heres a tip...everytime you take a line off you break years of heat seal that stoped them comming off or leaking....always use cabel ties on every single vacum line to stop them coming off.

Your problem dose sound like a waste gate issue thats missing a vacuum line. Or you have plumed them wrong causing the WG not to vent. The stock TT system is a tricky little basterd. Check all lines & make sure your 1 way valve to the pressure box is going the right way.

Where is your boost gauge reading boost from?

Hi Doc, Only just seen this.. Will try and have a look this weekend. I put a complete low mileage engine in the car.. came complete with turbo\'s and everything. The few lines I have had to put onto the inlet manifold for sensor and a like I have tied on. Not sure what you mean by the one way valve? Do you mean the dump valve/Recirc valves? They are defo correct. The boost guages reads from one of te stubs of the inlet manifold.

One turbo is leaking oil quite heavily and that has been drawing back through the system and is oozing out of the secondary turbo actuator. I would imagine there is a strong chance it has got into the actuators too. would that cause the problem. I need to try and get a rebuild kit for the turbo\'s so I can sort the oil leak while I try and save for a new single turbo set up.. anyone know where I can get one?

Thank you

Good to know the info about the turbo....first you have to fix that oil issue before we can fix the boost issue.

The one way valve I was talking about is the cream & green coloured plastic thing that sits under that black box between the plenum & alternator. Some times it can split from heat. Depending on what model engine you put in you will ither have just that 1 valve if its a late model or a few more of them tucked under the plenum.

How ever many you have...check them all for cracks...pull them off, blow through them but block the other end & listen for air leaks.

Saving for a single turbo? Thats the best thing you can do. Makes life sooo much easier.

Good luck with the oil problem.
