Topping up the coolant

Hi RX7

As a fairly new owner I am slowly getting to grips with the car I bought but I have been topping up the water many times and there seems to be no leak and I\'ve just noticed a kink in the pipe going from the air removal unit, I have put what I consider to be a lot of water into the correct filler but after a run the water in the expansion tank is cold and at the same level. Do I just fill and fill till the water does not drop in level?

Hi

You only need to fill up from the cap in the center of the engine - this is the main coolant cap.  You don\'t need to worry about the other two coolant points (behind drivers side popup lamp, and just behind the intercooler).

As long as the level at the center cap doesn\'t change, don\'t worry - the other two points are expansion tanks, so the level of coolant in them changes based on temperature etc.

Likewise, provided the level at the center cap isn\'t changing, don\'t worry if the others aren\'t either.

However, if you are putting lots of coolant into the main filling point, and it\'s just disappearing (after a drive), then you have a problem - either a split AST, a split cooling pipe, or problems with your water seals (although I think water seal problems result in clouds of white smoke/steam coming out the exhaust - very noticeable)

Hi RX7

Thanks just had a look and noticed all that I put in seems to be on the floor so it must have come out the expansion tank. The Apexi records 82-85 while driving and no lights or buzzers have come on.

lol! i did that when i first got it :] used it coz it says "coolant only"

:]

If no buzzer is coming on, then you shouldn\'t need to top it up. Obviously don\'t rely on the coolant level sensor, but it is very simple and if it fails the buzzer comes on - so if its not on it usually means it\'s working!

Coolant level should be about 2 inches below the top of the filler neck. And if you put in more than the system needs, the coolant system usually spits out MORE than you put in. So it might be that.

Many of the standard pipes do have rubber sleaves, thats normal.
