I seem to have a few probs:

- Stumbling revs when on very light constant throttle at low revs. It feels like the car will stall occasionally.
- Creamy white residue at the top of the dipstick
- Black stuff in the coolant overflow.

I take it this doesn\'t sound too good? :(

The first I think might just be plugs/leads?

Any thoughts or is this about to get expensive?

Ta!

Paul.

Like you say plugs and leads are probably the first thing to check

- Creamy white residue at the top of the dipstick

This is nothing to worry about as there is no breather on the oil system.
Its normal.

- Black stuff in the coolant overflow

No idea but like you say it dont sound to good

Cheers Steve, hmm, hopefully the coolant thing is ok, I guess if oil was mixing, I also see coolant in the oil?

pull out the dupstick bud, with water seal failure you`ll often see mayo on the dippy do da stick..

Idling yeah id say plugs :)

Whats in the overflow tank? oil or black mayo? just dirty water?... not herd off that b4 lol

Now I\'m confused, you both say different things for the creamy mayoey type stuff at the top of the dipstick?

Jono FD3

The creamy mayo mess is normal on the FD\'s during the damp months- October - July LOL!!!
If you takehere on a long run you will find that all the moisture from the oil will be burnt off & everything will be back to normal although you may have a bit left in the dipstick tube so give it a clean
!!
The iratic idle could be plugs or leads (possibly both?)

Floaters in the header tank...... drain it the coolant system & header tank, put fresh in & see if you get it coming back!

when my seals went on my first fd, was told mayo on the oil filler was normal, but mayo on the dipstick wasnt? but if coolent levels are fine, she starts hot or cold then im sure alls well bud :)

Oh well, we\'ll see, off down to Carl\'s in July anyways :)

I also forgot the quick puff of white smoke on startup hot or cold tho there is no trouble starting hot or cold.

The black bits in the expansion tank are just bits of crap from unfiltered water thats been put in (builds up in the rad etc (hard to clear there) - you can clean this all out with a proper good flush).  If you wipe them on the stick you will probably find that they smudge :)

probedb

Ahh, excellent, thanks for that :)

It\'s amazing what you start noticing when you can actually drive the car instead of it being in a garage with no engine ;)

Wow, your onto stage 2! :D

Stuck in stage 1 me - new engine & turbos when I get the car back :rollin

Ha! I must be on Stage Minus One, then. Car stuck in someone else\'s garage so I can\'t even go out at stand and look at it and dream (or sit in it and make vroom noises, lol). Drive it? Is that what you\'re supposed to do with them? Nah, It\'ll only break again...

probedb

Hehe, yeah managed to get to Stage 2 thankfully :) It\'s lots of fun! ;)
