Hi peeps. i took my car for a blast out the other day to clear all the crap out as it was going in for the MOT. After blasting through the gears on the turbo:D I looked in the rear view mirror to see a fair amount (more than usual) of smoke coming out of the back. Now I just put it down to the fact it hadn\'t been given It a good hard run for a while.
Now today i took it out for a run. I gave it a blast up to 7k in 2nd and eased of to a coast only to be greeted with a load of crap out of the back on the over run. Im thinking I have blown an oil seal in turbo. It only does it when you give it a lot and it still pulls like a freight train on steroids. Does this sound right to you guys and will I damage anything else driving it when its like this if I keep off the boost.
I don\'t need to upgrade my stock turbo to beat your ass!

Get your finger out, get it on the road and start driving it then!!! (B.Martin 25/2/12)

I had similar symptoms on mine, and thought it was the turbo - always smoked on let off, but the turbo turned out to be fine.  It could be oil injection system is putting too much in, or you may be getting some blow bank into the intake.

What\'s the oil consumption like ?

Oil consumption seems normal. Although this is a new issue so time will tell if its using more.
Whats blow bank by the way?

Oops - that should have been blow back - I mean oil coming out from the crank having positive pressure - the stuff that comes out of the oil neck and through the one way check valve back into the air induction system.  Tis mostly just harmless vapours - but I\'ve had oil in the pipe - not much, but it all adds up to the smoking.

When your pushing the engine hard, there is some escaping vapours, oil and so on which are vented through the oil neck and back to be combusted - I am guessing when you let off, the proportion of these materials compared to the air/fuel mixture volume is increased leading to a dirtier exhaust emission for a brief period.

Ok next question is how do I check that? and how d I correct it if that is what is happening?

I can answer one of those questions - if it\'s happening, then there will be oil in the line that has the small checkvalve going back to the intake pipe.

Look for the small pipes connecting to the intake between the filter and the turbo - one of these has a 1 way check valve on it - pull the pipe off the end and check to see what\'s inside.

As for how to stop it - the system is designed to route those things back into the intake to be combusted by the engine - you can route them to a catch can instead - then you would need to empty that at some interval.

As for why you\'re getting so much - don\'t know - mine was worse just before the engine went - so I hope that\'s not an early indicator - but I still get a bit even now after letting off from heavy acceleration - so some is expected

thanks Prof. I\'ll have a look over the weekend and see what I can find. The only other thing that I have done to the car out of the ordinary is leaving it to stand for up to a week or 2 without starting it (over a couple of months). It\'s normally my daily drive so I wonder if has dropped some oil into a pipe or something and it has built up for a while insted of burning off. Now that i have started driving it again it could be burning the excess off. Maybe anyway! It always has chucked quite a lot of crap out of the back so hopefully its just something of nothing.

give it a good drive it might do the trick. As dave said check the oil in the inlet pipe and also at the intercooler end, always good to clean this b4 the MOT anyway. if you have a catch tank then you never really have to do it. Its the route I am going down on the red project car.

So apart from the oil filler where does the oil get blown-back(?) through?

Funny this came up as I was wondering what exactly the catch can did and also why all tuner FD\'s seem to have them (not many FC\'s with them on tho?)

the engine breaths oil via the crankcase and this will go back into the inlet side via a NRV. On the TII this is one of the smaller hoses that connects to you inlet hose close to the dump valve. better than dumping overboard on most cars.  better to catch this in a can and empty it every now and then.  One of thew main reasons why you see oil in the inlet side if you have a heavy breather. better for the MOT as well.
