I may be able to get hold of a 1.5 or 2 way diff, thing is the guy isnt sure what make or whether its 1.5 way or 2 way.  I\'m even a little concerned its either!!

So if you have a diff in front of you, off the car, is there a way you can tell if a) its an aftermarket one and b) if its 1.5 or 2 way?

Initial-D

These numbers refer to the operation of the Limited slip differential. A 1 way LSD only locks when the car is accelerating, which helps to keep the car stable under acceleration. A 2 way LSD locks equally during acceleration and braking which additionally helps to keep the car stable and balanced under braking, although can require a little extra driver skill to avoid understeer in corners by unlocking the LSD A 1.5 way LSD gives full lock under acceleration and partial lock under braking, thereby helping to keep the car more stable in braking, but without understeer.

The way these are implemented in practice is determined by the shape of the cam and pinion arrangement. The diagram below shows how the 2-way version of the Kaaz LSD operates.

Nice one Ben!!

Been talking to someone about 2-way diffs and they have said something that concerns me a bit. They said 2-way diffs can lock the rear wheels up when braking / deaccelerating!!!  :2eek    How accurate is this?

Initial-D

Its quite true!!
Thats why I\'m after a 1.5 way myself as you will have the added benefit of lockup on accelaration and still have the saftey margin when driving on the road in the wet! 2 way are a drifters best friend.

Timmy

i thought a 2way is more likely to enduce oversteer hence why drifters use them.

True:yes but Initial-D is also true a car with a 2way diff will have a less tenancy (willingness) to turn (at low speeds) and will require a better or more refined chassis setup.
If a 2way diff was fitted to a otherwise standard rwd car it would have a tenancy to understeer at low speeds only...I think would be too much weight transfer and not a great deal of control to correct the oversteer.  A car setup with lower profile tyres, uprated suspension/anti roll bars, bushes etc... It will balance out the tenancy to understeer. But either way your gonna get more oversteer than under and if a 2way diff was fitted.

2way diffs lock under both acceleration and braking. I would only recommend for motorsport or serious driving/drifting... There very noisy and clunky for most road users.

1.5way diffs lock under acceleration and slightly or half as much under de-acceleration/braking. Best for fast road use.

1way diffs lock only on acceleration.

There is also how the lsd has been set up to consider... The diff can be set to come in at low torque or a higher torque level by changing the thickness/radius of the discs etc...

Its quite a complicated subject, and I would recommend only buying if you know who made the diff. Then you can determine how it has been setup and where to go for parts because it will at some point need rebuilding.

Here is a pics of my Mazdaspeed 2way diff for a FC.
But remember if this someone still has a rex and has a diff spare, then chances are its come frome Japan with a 2way diff and he like most has\'nt been able to live with it! Could be your gain or your loss depending on how to look at it!:Thumbs-up

Just to thread hijack, I have a 1.5way that I\'m looking to sell or possibly swap/partex for a 2 way :)

AtomicRex

Dont sell it!!  What make is it?

I know, with kaaz, that you can get the internals to swap between the two.  Doesnt cost that much either.
