How does the the power steering on a 1986 rx7 decide when you\'re sitting in a parking lot, or moving down the road? Is it computer controlled, speed, or trans? I assume its first or reverse, but it would save some time if i knew...
thanks

Hi and a huge welcome from all at Mazdarotaryclub.com

As far as l know the speed sensitive steering via gearbox then ECU was only introduced on the 3rd Gen [ 1992 onwards ]

Hope this helps
All the best Clive

hmmm... so it\'s not speed or gear sensitive? I assumed it was because it has 2 pressure lines and a return, unless the rubber line isn\'t a return. In a parking lot the steering feels like it should be more powerful, but it\'s great at speed. The strange thing is when the belt got loose and started slipping the steering got easier, way easier...
On a sidenote, how low does the rotary idle?

approx between 6 & 800 on my fd

Sorry and welcome

my 1988 had speed sensitive steering and so does my 1990 TII - i usually find that it stiffens up at about 25 - 30 mph

and mine idles at about 1500 - but i darent tweak it lower :)

On my 2nd Gen, disconnecting the speedo cable at the gearbox gave very light steering...
