hello everyone, looking at getting my 1st rx7 tomorrow.

just wondered what kind of maintance ie: what type of oil
to use, how often to change it ,and general tips on owning one!

thanks in advance !

erm if you have a gander in the FAQ & general queries/ hints & tips on purchasing section  then many of the things you\'ll want to bear in mind will be in there but to give a quick idea, from my limited knowledge , oil is usually a mineral & NOT synthetic type recommended although some have used synth with no issues, less so if used from new as i recall, but as i say generally mineral oil is all you\'ll hear recommended & the easiest to find (& nearest to recommended viscosity etc) is the castrol GTX 10W:40 MINERAL (not to be confused with the synth type varieties of GTX) which is readily available from most halfords etc & good value at <£15 for 5 litres so no excuse for not changing it pretty damn often....(6k miles max really, really 3k!)
plugs are another item which needs changing pretty frequently as i recall but anyway if you check out the various sticky threads at the top the various sections & you\'ll get an idea.

PS what sort of RX7 are you looking for/at then? (read maybe different to above for non 3rd gens i dunno ;))

timh

tips on owning BTW in addition to the inevitable add fuel & money & seriously enjoy! the usual turbo car advise of warm up & cool down engine properly before giving it serious revs & erm beware of slippery when wet moments http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_1_116.gif\' border=0>
There\'s loads more but that\'s the most obvious & easy (i\'m not so good with the hard stuff ) advice! lol

might be best to see if theres an uprated ECU, as with those mods it will most probably be running lean if its on the standard one, which would make budgeting for rebuild v.good idea;)

timh

if it is running lean ,is it just a case of getting it set up properly.
or we talking uprated ecu , fuel controller etc?

ScuttleRX

Ideally you will need an uprated Ecu, you wont be able to change the fueling without one, a lot of people go for the Power FC (myself included:)), as it is relatively cheap, with enough features to satisfy most, and there a quite a few people who know how to tune them (well, compared to knightsports/re-amemiya/etc ecu\'s).

Im not sure if fuel controllers would be ok, someone else on here might know more about them so I will leave that to them. But if you have to go for one you might aswell get the ecu as it will be a lot more tunable, especially if want to change things like boost, ignition timing, etc.

If its a dealer your buying from and hes not sure whether ecu is upgraded its located in the passenger footwell, take off the kickplate and have a look, uprated ones should have stickers or something on to show what they are.

Is the car an import or a UK one?

Hope this helps
Andy

ScuttleRX

btw, power fc\'s are about £650. Might be able to haggle the price down a bit if it turns out you\'ll need one ;)

All i would say is get some knowledge on what to look for before you start discussing any money, as by that time you will know how much they are worth, and saves sales man giving you all the crap talk!!!

Most garages i spoke to start with "well i dont know much about them but...." get some knowledge from the guys on here some very knowledgeable peeps on here;)  who may save you hassle.

If its a garage please let us guys know which one as somebody on here may have had past dealings?

Good luck though dont let us guys put you off just make sure you\'re done your homework!!!:bandit

scooby_si

well you\'ll definately need aan aftermarket ECU & remap for any fulldecat/exhaust thing & i must confess i haven\'t heard loads of different RX7\'s so no direct knowledge but i know blitz nurspec centre & back box is usually VERY LOUD i say VERY LOUD http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_5_3.gif\' border=0> lol
