Hi, im buying my 2nd rx7 tomorrow, having previously owned an \'88 Egi for just over 2 years, my new set of a wheels is a \'93 fd twin turbo, imported from japan, tbh im not the most technical person, i have a rough idea of the power and performance of the car, but as it has modifications im not to sure as to how quick it will be....

The car has an HKS Induction system and Dump valve, its in good condition and has been resprayed a unique metallic blue, everything is in good order but the bloke im buying it off claims that the car has 300BHP+ because of the mods, after reading a couple of threads it seems that this is unlikely...any ideas?

Also ive read a fair bit about engine problems on the site...my cars covered 46000 miles, and tbh im quite worried about the amount of problems rx7 owners encounter, exactly how reliable are the 3rd gens? My 2nd gen egi never had any problems in 2 years and had covered well over 90k with no rebuild or major breakdown.

At the moment my car is at at rotechniks (i think) getting the spark plugs changed and having a new sensor installed...im not sure exactly what the sensor is for but it seems as if the car is being prepared with care...Any ideas?

Hello and welcome.

Firstly 300 bhp + seems a bit much for the mods that u have listed, I have a 92\' with an HKS power flow induction kit and a de-cat straight through exhaust with a mapped apexi power ECU and i had the power measured at about 290 bhp (235 hp at the wheels)  Best thing to do is to get it dyno\'d but i think it may be less than 300.

I dont believe reliablity is a problem for RX7\'s so long as it has been looked after in Japan and i\'m sure you will do the same - check oil and coolant weekly, used optimax or super unleaded, let the turbos warm up and cool down properly etc)  It is said that RX7\'s do require a refresh in the engine dept after about 60,000 miles but this is not set in stone.  Many engines last much longer and will depend on how modded it is and how much it has been thrashed.

As for the sensor i\'m not sure.

No way 300bhp with just those mods unless theres some others you aren\'t telling us about, 300 bhp is easily achievable if you chuck some money at it though :)

but either way congrats on your first third Gen, don\'t be too scared about the engines :)

Get a compression check done and get the results on paper.

According to one fo the rotary experts there was some problem with many \'93 FDs - Mazda JP changed the coolant they used, as long as it was changed regularly it was fine but left too long it turned acidic.  unfortunately many japanese owners seem to be lax on the servicing side.  Basically there\'s a higher number of premature water seal failures on 93 cars (apparently).

thx guys, everything turned out great, the car had the engine reconditioning at rxheaven, its in great nick, bit frustrated that i cant take the engine over 4000rpm till 1k is up but i really am surprised at how quick the car is, its amazing how many people stop and ask what the car is and how fast it will go, even had some schoolkids who offered to swap their mums beemer for my car at a shell station :p

might post some pics when i get a digicam,ta!

0.8 bar of boost - Geff had to lower it when it was mapped cos I have such a free flowing exhaust and the boost was spiking.

sounds healthy though!

i\'m only on 0.5 (lil ol me) ;)
