I installed a turbo timer a few weeks ago and ever since my dash backlighting, front lights, fog lights, and ashtray light don\'t work. Basically everything that turns on when the light stalk is set to the 1st position. Second position being the pop up headlights (which still works fine). All I did for the install was splice 3 wires. I\'ve since reversed the installation but not luck, lights still dead.

My car had been converted to have daytime lights (canada and it\'s a japanese car) so that the car acted as though the stalk was always in the first position even if it was set to all light off. I located the relay for this they had spliced under the dash and completely removed it so it isn\'t the problem. Playing with the 3 wires that come from the light stalk I can make it so the headlights pop up when the stalk is in the first position instead of the second so I know the switch works.

I\'m completely stumped as to what\'s wrong but no combination of putting wires together under the dash is making the lights (the dash backlight, front and fogs) come on which leads me to think the problem is further down the wiring. Is there a relay that happens to control all these items? I\'m all out of ideas :(

I looked at fuses but the fuse that controls these items also controls other things that work fine (I might be mistaken).

Basically my question is, is there a relay for these items and where is it?

Though I remain confused how something like this could have gotten broken from me splicing 3 completely unrelated wires, maybe just coincidence...

Parking lights and tail lights out? Check for a dodgy fuse first . I think they are all on the same circuit

Tail lights are out too, but brake lights work... Then again those are turned on by the switch being in the first position. I looked up what the fuses do and non seems to map to the issues I\'m having so I\'m leaning towards relays, but I can\'t find anything that tells me which relays do what, or where they are for that matter. Ideas?

Thanks

Iv experienced this problem when i took my dash apart, its probably a fuse if you get the workshop manual you can print off the fuse box diagram which makes it easier to find.

Is this an FD? If so it sounds like the TNS relay (second one from the left IIRC in the relay box on the slam panel of the bonnet). You can bypass the relay with an automotive fuse (the blades fit into the relay slots exactly). If the dash lights when you do this, the relay was the problem. Otherwise, fuse like they said.

i had this problem when i took my dash apart. i failed to remember to plug the interior light dimmer switch plug into the back of the switch!

edit : ah wait a minute. your actual light-lights arent working.. probably wont be this then...

gvandergaast

Stupid question, what\'s the IIRC?

I haven\'t touched any fuses or relays but it did just occur to me that there are some fuses on the positive battery connector and I did disconnect that, so maybe there\'s a bad contact. Still probably a relay (i think) since the fuses don\'t seem to map to the issues I\'m having (fuse for tail lights not the same as dash backlighting for example) so I\'ll be looking at that for sure...

If someone can just tell me what the IIRC is :)

Thanks for the help guys

And yes, It\'s a 92 Efini FD3S (Japanese import)

gvandergaast

IIRC = if I recall, duh... Haven\'t had my coffee yet...

gvandergaast

Quick Q forn Andysmee above... what\'s TNS stand for?

andysmee

#9
no bloomin idea! the TNS relay runs the dash, running and tail lights. (we don\'t have running lights in the UK or import cars)

just googled. apparently it means Tail Number Sidelights

gvandergaast

cool, Thanks :) I\'m not seeing any relays by the slam panel though but I\'ll keep looking...

RemarkLima

If the car is stock you\'ll have to take the air duct off (2 x 10mm bolts) in front of the IC and airbox. Then you\'ll see a relay box above the rad.

Hope it\'s just that!
Montego Blue 94 R2 FD3S... Bling not included.

Well, I found it. It was right there, clearly marked and all. I cut a piece of wire and connected every combination of connector of the relay socket but nothing :(

I know the switch works, looks like the relay works. Not sure where to go from here. I\'m guessing replace the wiring harness? I\'m not sure if that can be done in sections? Suggestions welcome!

andysmee

oh dear. You might want to check if the loom under the drivers side wheel arch is ok...the wheel can rub through the loom!!! or burn out due to crappy mazda wiring

gvandergaast

That looks fine... I just find it conspicuous that this happened while I was working under the dash... If I just knew which wire was causing the problem I could just splice it to the 12V on the ignition. It\'s been a month now and it\'s frustrating. I can\'t even get the car plated now as it can\'t pass inspection.
